I'm a computer cripple, hardly know anything about computers apart from the basics, and I have a big problem with my computer at the moment.

Today my email was infected with the W32.Novarg.A@mm or W32/Mydoom@MM virus (i believe it has many other names too). I had no protection software unfortunately, I know I'm an idiot. Anyway i went to the symantec website and downloaded a free trial copy of Norton antivirus 2004 which was about 23mb and took 20mins to download, and after doing all the install stuff i ran it. It detected the virus and asked me if i wanted to get rid of the virus and i clicked yes. I don't know what happened then but it said it had successfully deleted the virus.

Anyway it must've deleted something else in my computer because now every time i try to open an application whether it be explorer or excell or word, a box comes up which says

"Windows cannot find mkvujrm.exe.

This program is needed for opening files of type 'Application'.

Location of mkvujrm.exe:"

And the there's a box below with

C:\ (and a flashing cursor waiting for me to type something)

and buttons

OK Cancel and Locate

below that.

I really hope I'm making sense here.

This computer has many very important files in excell and word that i need to access on a daily basis, let alone my email requirements which i REALLY need for communicating with my customers.

Does anyone have any idea what has happened, and how if at all it is possible to fix this problem so that my computer goes back to business as usual andi can open my programs again

Now I read on the newspaper websites that this virus is fairly new and is spreading like crazy and is extremely dangerous.

Any advice would be MUCH MUCH MUCH appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Fingers crossed someone can help.

1/. copy any important documents to disk

2/. If you have XP, try going through system restore as per the instructions here - http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.html

You could also try searching the registry for mkvujrm.exe. However this virus is particularly nasty and has been classified on highest end of scale by most anti-virus companies.

Prepare to reinstall your PC.

OK Norton have a removal tool for this virus available at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.removal.tool.html

If for some reason you can't run the removal tool or it doesn't work then check out this link:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.html

Print out a copy of this page (Printing link is at the top of the page). Go down to the section called "Removal Instructions" and follow the instructions step by step.

If you are have any problems with these instructions the PM me and I will guide you through.

Cheers

Beat me to it.

Damn this virus, damn it too hell, our phones haven't stopped ringing all bloody day at work.

Sorry peoples, if you haven't updated your virus software, there is nothing to do but send a Tech out to restore your whole system, to the others who have, NO we can't stop emails being sent to you, let the virus software do it's work, or just turn your pooters off, if you are sick of getting email virus alerts.

Worst part is, that they say it won't be gone until early next week. :(

Might have a sickie tomorrow & friday.

I had two e-mails which were detected with having the MyDoom thingy tonight.

Thankfully I've got into the habit of Live-Updating my Norton AV every time I go online. I never used to do it, but it takes just one bad experience...

My biggest problem I have at the moment is I'm getting the "Dial Up Connection" box appearing every time I try to run a program like Word, or Excel, or many other things.

Even when I boot up, I have to exit the box a couple of dozen times before it disappears. It's not crippling, but bloody annoying.

Any easy remedy ?

i still use mailwasher pro it allows you to read message senders and subject content from your isp before downloading the whole message, it allows you to delete them from the isp server before they get to your computer.

more protection and less spam mail. you can also configure your hotmail account on it so less junkmail from there too.

you can also block email addresses and bounce emails to back where they came frm.

Talk about ill-informed, ignorant scaremongering. Maybe you should get a clue before posting blatant propoganda.

good call, apparently the second part of the virus kicks in tomorrow when it will run the opened attachment and it will search for hidden info on your hard drive
