I had a very strange Firefox problem myself the other week, i was away for a week on holiday and when i came back firefox would refuse to open and would just crash.

I did a few things and got it to load some pages, but it was still reacting terribly, sometimes took up to 30 refreshes before attempting to load or connect to a page. If this is a similar problem to the one your experiencing then all i did to fix the problem was use a program which just resets the TCP/IP stack and thankfully it worked a treat.

The program i used can be downloaded from here ...

This is a solution for said problem on Windows XP with regards to using Firefox. Good Luck to you

I had exactly the same problem. I'm not sure in your case, but I'm fairly sure it has something to do with the proxy settings. For me, my Uni runs a proxy server, so we have to have the settings set for that.

I use Firefox @ Uni & Opera at home, so that I don't have to change the settings, however it is relatively easy to remove the proxy settings & set back up when you go back to Uni. I'm too lazy to do that :P

That would be it! A library technician changed my proxy settings (I have no idea what they are) a couple of weeks ago, because I was having trouble logging on. I should have connected the two, but didn't. :(

So Firefox isn't clever enough to be able to work with both? That kinda sucks.

Yeah, doesn't appear so. I'm fairly sure that there's only a couple of options you need to click. One being direct connection instead of proxy?

you can get an addon for firefox, cant remember wat it was called, that basically gives u a little icon in the bottom right corner, that allows you to toggle proxy use on/off just by clicking the icon.

just search firefox plugins for 'Proxy', it was a little green icon it placed on ur screen. I used it for exactly the same thing when i was at uni.

Edit: luckily for you i'm dreading work right now.

Cheers Nardz. I know I probably sound stupid but I have no idea how to get this to work. Do I need to access it whilst browsing in Firefox?

If so, how do I change the proxy setting (the hard way), so that I can access Firefox, as I am currently at home and may not be back at uni until mid-next-week?

yeah you access it while browsing in firefox, and there should be a link that says "add to firefox" or something like that, depending on what version you're using.

To do it manually you go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Settings and im guessing you have to alternate between no proxy/automatic proxy configuration URL
