Ross made 2 very important points that his old 'aloof' boss should consider:

1) we played our pre-season on AFL prepared grounds - I don't know the currator in Lavington or Narranderra, but I'm sure they do a good job.

2) we played & beat Adelaide in Adelaide.

oh!, and $300k into the Footy Dept. doesn't go astray

As long as we never hit the field with a mindset of accepting a loss at anytime is fine by me!

I think you can see how important this game could be for us by watching the shift in the attitude of the players (from both teams) throughout the game. In the heat, both teams were sloppy to begin with, and really didn't seem to be concentrating. But by about the 3rd or 4th quarter, you could tell instinct had taken over for both teams - they were in a footy final, the crowd was pumped, and they became pumped too. I don't know if the TV showed Neil Craig during the game, but they put his face up on the Footy Park big-screen at times, and anybody who tells me HE wasn't treating it like a final was blind or delusional!

Grant Thomas did the stupidest thing imaginable by refusing to really celebrate the 2004 win - hell, he practically made it feel like the boys should REGRET winning. Great to see Lyon is a smarter judge of occassion.

NAB cup is far from useless. 385,000k, showcasing our young players and new recruits, as well as winning two interstate matches.

For mine that's the most important bit!!!

I'm extremely happy my mob did the same... played on AFL sanctioned parks!

:thumbsu: to all those points ... , I would hope every game we play - we try to win, regardless of a preseason comp or not.

Playing on AFL grounds, HAS to be a good thing + the $$$

Also interesting to note that the few injuries that did occur (Koschitzke (Tightness/Groin/Whatever it was, Hudghton (Hamstring/Tightness) and Gehrig (Calf) all happened at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

The other games were all played at either Telstra Dome and AAMI stadium, so perhaps there is something to be said for that.

seeing the saints run out the game against adelaide without injuries, in such heat is fantastic

Means alot to me and the club in that regard just to show how much more theyre willing to give this year

Bottom line is:
Winning is better than losing.
$380K is better than nothing.
Significant increase in memberships will follow.

It's all good news to me!

Grats on the win guys and all the best in the season. :thumbsu:
Makes me feel a bit better knowing we got knocked out 1st round by the eventual winners. ;)

And the idea of doing well in the NAB cup means you'll do crap in the real season is purely in place because of Carlton. ;)

Not wanting to add any more fuel but didn't Geelong win in 2006?
