Maric & lids need to be mothballed in any game that doesn't involve 4 points.
we gotta somehow try and get 50 games between them in 2015, bugger the piss n wind cup.

50 games between the two of them is 25 games each which is the entire season plus 3 finals.

I wouldn't worry about Deledio too much not like he has missed many games in his career.

NAB Cup has extended bench

Certainly at the start I'd be resting our Top 10 players and putting in most of the kids, especially those on the rookie list who will be fighting for the last elevated rookie position. Hoping that Arnot is knocking the door down to get elevated to make the most of his last chance. I really think there is a forward pocket spot for him now Jake King has retired as we miss his forward pressure.

There's another player bookmarked for that apparently.

B: Hunt Astbury Grimes

F: Mcdonough McKenzie McBean
FOLL: Dea CEllis McIntyre Arnot Lloyd Gordon Elton and all the new guys.

We should be playing our youngsters on the edge of the 22.

I want to see McBean, McDonough, Arnot, Lloyd, Lennon, and Elton play pretty much every game. These are the players that need the AFL level experience. They're not going to get it playing in the reserves, and without the AFL level experience the coaching staff are reluctant to play them and then will drop them when they don't pick up the pace of the AFL immediately.

I'd start off with a relatively inexperienced side and use it to take a look at some fringe types under a bit of pressure, also gives the 4 midfield draftees a bit of a taste as well. Second week I'd add a few more experienced players to the mix to allow them to blow out the cobwebs a little and find a bit of match fitness. Finally the last game would be a full practice with those in contention for round 1 playing so they can push their claims. For mine the preseason isn't so much about winning games but getting a good look at the list and trying a few things for the season proper, just in case we need to call on fringe types to fill a hole for a few weeks.

This might seem contrary, but -

I'd like us to go in the NAB basically full strength. On the past 3 years we have started the real season slowly.

In 2012, we won 1 of our first 5 games (against Melbourne).

In 2013, yes we won our first 3 - against duds. Then we lost our next 3 when we came up against good sides.

Last year we won 1 of our first 4 (including being beaten by the dogs and GC), and won 2 of our first 8. Hey, we then won 9 in a row and snuck into the 8!! Why not win 9 in a row at the start of the season and be sitting on top of the ladder?

In our last 5 seasons (ie all of Hardwick's time), we have won more games in the 2nd half of the season than the first. Does this mean the players aren't fit, or fully trained up in tactics and gameplans at the start of the season?

Something needs to change...................................

For the first game i would go:

B: Dea, Astbury, Batch
HB: C. Ellis, Elton, Grimes
C: McIntosh, Miles, Hunt
HF: Lennon, Griff, Gordon
FF: McBean, McKenzie, McDonough
Foll: Hampson, Conca, Drummond
Int: Vlastuin, Mennadue, Butler, Lloyd, Knights

And with each game bring start adding in senior players for youngins, Eg:

B: Morris, Astbury, Batch
HB: Houli, Chaplin, Grimes
C: B. Ellis, Miles, Hunt
HF: Lennon, Griff, Dusty
FF: McBean, Vickery, S. Edwards
Foll: Hampson, Conca, Vlastuin
Int: Petterd, Gordon, Lloyd, Knights, C. Ellis, Foley

whoever they pick; they need to work out our four Achilles heels* from last years opening rounds

a) fast rebound from halfback: are we RFC rnd 1-13 2014 or RFC thereafter?
b) How Treacle is going to fit in the forward line
c) a structure where forward defensive pressure is maintained
d) ensuring correct cattle in on the park#

* (metaphoric Achilles heels, not actual Achilles heels as per Lids)
#(actual Achilles heels, bike accidents,non-healing toes, ruckman groins and knees etc)

Therefore
a) big focus should be on half-back set up. The main 'positions available' /positions up for grabs are on this line. We should try out a few combinations
b) Griff, Treacle and Jack should play as many games together as possible.. which is not ideal for Jack I know; but we cant spend the first 8 rounds of the year finding out if its actually going to work or not.
c) with Martin, and Lids and three talls likely to play alot of time up forward during the season - who is going to do the in/under dirty work to nail fast defenders? The NAB should be used to find who is going to fill that role
d) forfeit all NAB games at half time.
