How do you think we will approach it?

Last year we played all the young guys, I think there was only about 6 regulars in the side.

This year we should play more regulars IMO. Our slow start to 06 could of been because our key players were still a bit rusty after not playing in the NAB cup.

Thoughts?

Going to be similar as last year, but i do think we'll have more regulars in the side. But i doubt the key players (Bazza, Leo, Goodes, MOL) will play. The NAB cup will just help us 'warm up' for the season ahead, and give our youngsters more of a run in the senior level.

I reckon we'll continue with our 'slow starters' trademark though.

*edit* you just added a poll! LOL

Use the NAB to our advantage and pour in the youngsters to play. Seeing as the AFL season wouldn't be easy for the ressies to come into the side, i think we can rest our key players and let the young ones play. :thumbsu: Screw the NAB cup and just throw 'em in. Experience and practise is what they need. And oh, talent.

We've had a slow start in each of the past two seasons, yet have played off in two GFs, for one win and one very close miss. That indicates that the coaches are doing something right in terms of getting players in form and fit at the part of the season that matters.

In 2004 the Saints looked unbeatable for the first half of the year yet fell before the end. In 2005 it was the Eagles who looked invincible early, and while they did make it to the final game of the year, it wasn't without a stutter towards the end of the H&A. Last year there were times when it looked as if 15 teams were playing for the right to be thumped by the Crows in the GF, but, again, the early dominant team came up short.

It is a cliche, but premierships are not won in April, and especially not in February or March.

Play young ones and a few seniors. The whole thing means nothing IMHO and it would truly suck to get an injury to a key player.

Beg to differ. Not in April but arguably in the lead up! Pre-season counts big time I reckon.

The pretenders cup is just not on, but would not be surprised if many top liners get a run and they hang into it a bit more this year.

1.Hard country grounds are to be avoided at all costs,
2. The experience guys need to work out how the new/old pus'in the back rule will be addressed by opposition,
3. Lastly and perhaps trite but Eagles rematch first game... I reckon a lot of pressure by AFL to make it memorable

Just my $0.02

Of course pre-season counts in terms of players getting the requisite fitness base to get them through a long season. But surely you are not suggesting that exhibited form during the pre-season is a good predictor of the chances of playing well in September?

yeh i think continue with the trend of the last few years. its not really worth risking the halls, mickey o's, kirk's, tadgh's, jolly's... even tho its not worth risking those players, i still see the pre-season cup as an important event. of course it no indication of how you'll do during the season, but it will get the boys into "game mode". & with each victory, the team morale will increase!

also, i would like to see spida in there for a run (if fully recovered), he does have to prove he's worthy to be in the best 22!

The last time we took the pre-season serously is when paul roos was still playing
