Name Prefixes

So this has been really bugging me of late. Surely these should be a thing of the past? The times have changed, and surely name prefixes ought to go. I don't really see the point of their existence anymore.

I'm not all the comfortable being called sir at restuarants. And although I've never worked in a restuarant, I've worked in some "high class" bars over the years and I rarely (as in I don't think I ever did, but probably did a couple of times) call someone sir - Much to the chagrin of a few of my managers over the years.

The people that are serving me, and the people I am serving... We are all no better than each other.

Meh. If they don't know my name what else are they meant to say. Sir or Mr is better than "hey you". And if I'm in a bank or somewhere where they do know my name then I'd prefer Mr. Alley. I'm not their mate and I'd prefer them to be professional.

I often call people who serve me in shops or whatever Sir. Figure it's a nicer way to address someone who is helping you out.

It's funny how some people like being called Sir as a sign of respect or professionalism - it shows how much meaning the prefixes actually have these days. How many of you are actually knighted, and thus 'worthy' of being called Sir?
