Retired Nathan Brown

Really Nathan had a good year . Yes he was dropped a few times but that was more because he had noone to line up against as several teams went small and fast on their forward line . I think the only game he actually struggled was the last game against the Swans but he had a few mates that day . Will still play a lot next year but more importantly will be important in teaching younger teammates how to playfull back . I imagine Joyce , Austin and Battle will all benefit from both his and Carlisles experience .

VETERAN defender Nathan Brown is set to earn a career lifeline and sign a one-year extension to play on at St Kilda for 2020.
Kept in limbo by the Saints during the Telstra AFL Trade Period, Brown is working through the final stages of negotiations to take the final contract available at Moorabbin for next season.

With former Port Adelaide key defender Dougal Howard arriving as one of five Saints' trade coups last week, Brown's future had appeared uncertain.
However, with Jack Newnes' delisting on Friday morning taking the total number of departures from the Saints' senior list to nine, Brown will extend his career into a 12th season.

There is a belief Howard could also play parts in attack at the Saints next year, with Josh Bruce departing for the Western Bulldogs and Max King to develop alongside Paddy Ryder.

That would see Brown form part of the key defensive group that includes Jake Carlisle, Callum Wilkie, Josh Battle and Jonathon Marsh.
The 30-year-old played 16 matches for the Saints this year, taking his career tally to 183 after spending the first 10 years of his career at Collingwood.
He tasted premiership success for the Pies against the Saints in the 2010 Grand Final.

St Kilda defender Nathan Brown will play on in 2020 after signing a one-year contract.
The 30-year-old played 16 games in 2019, while also taking on a senior leadership role.
Brown's consistency in defence was a key feature for the Saints, placing second in the league for the number of one-percenters (9.9) and spoils (8.9) per game.
List Manager James Gallagher said the club would benefit enormously from his presence both on and off the field.
“Nathan has been very patient as we work through our list changes, and we are rapt to be able to offer him a spot for next season.
“He had a consistent year as a lock-down defender, but his impact on our group goes beyond what we see on the field.
“He obviously offers premiership experience, but it’s the connection he has developed with our young players and the standards he sets in his training and preparation that makes him important to the culture we are trying to build at the club.”
Brown has played 53 games for the Saints to bring his career tally to 183 since being drafted with pick No. 10 in the 2006 AFL Draft.

St Kilda Football Club advises veteran defender Nathan Brown has returned to Victoria after departing the Saints’ Noosa hub yesterday.

Chief Operating Officer Simon Lethlean said Brown had made the difficult decision with a view to the best interests of his family.

“Nathan leaves the hub with the full support of everyone at St Kilda,” Lethlean said.

“He is such a respected member of our team and the spiritual leader of the connection, culture and standards that we are building here at the Saints.

“The players and staff love ‘the big fella’ and we will miss him – but he has made the right call for him and his family, and we are very proud of him for that.”

“At the end of the day, family comes first and for Nathan that means being at home in Victoria right now.”

“At the right time, if Nathan has played his last game for the Saints then we will recognise his contribution appropriately. But for the time being, we wish he and his family all the best.”
