And that is the crux of the matter. If the club get no on-field advantage, what does it matter if they pay him out additional compensation, or help him financially? It doesn't give any on-field advantage, so should not be part of the salary cap.

Probably depends on whether the AFL deem it a golden handshake.

I don't think they'd be keen on allowing golden handshakes outside the salary cap from the club for medically retired players. It is a practice that would benefit a team that could afford to give them.
