Whilst I am on record stating that we need some more big bodied forwards, I believe even more so that we need players in our forward half with natural forward instinct.

I love guys like Deboer and Mayne but I don't know if I would deem them natural forwards. Guys like Ballas, Mellington, Walters and Pav are probably our most natural forwards. I define natural forward as someone creative, not afraid to take players on and have a shot on goal (for medium/smalls) and the bigger fwds need to also be creative but take a contested grab and take responsibility to kick goals. We lack both at the moment - any thoughts?
 
Reckon there's a lot of knee jerk bullshit on these boards as a result of Vossys *ber flood.

EVERY forward craves space.

You give Chopper an open 50 and he's an outstanding lead up forward.
 
I've been pumping Mellington up because I believe he is our most natural forward. Can score goals from limited opportunities and is very good at snaps, bananas and is a good set shot.

Agreed - hope he gets a run this week with Mello out. I have seen a bit of WAFL this year and he looks like a natural full stop. The other guy who has impressed me as a natrual forward is Max Duffy from East Freo and he was overlooked last draft.
 
Agree with the gist of the OP. The 2 obvious natural forwards on our list that currently aren't getting a game would be Crozier and Walters. Would be good to get one of them in the team

I have two muppets who sit behind me (think: Waldorf and Statler but not funny) who sit their criticising all game. You know the type - Just kick it. Why are you going backwards? How long does a quarter go for (the response was 25 minutes lol).

Anyway, when Mello took his shot near the city end in the 2nd they said shame you missed McPhee would have got you a game for another week.
 
At least if you mix Mello up with McPhee you wouldn't think he was soft.

Pav must be thinking of Duffield; he's also blond you know.

Mellington is a bit like Banfield for me, but not as fast. He just doesn't get into the game enough. 5 disposals against Geelong, although 3 goals. But you'd be expecting him to play like Ballantyne, push up the ground and receive the ball. Having said that, when he did it yesterday he burnt Pav, who was 10m infront of Patful (who did not towel him up no matter what the idiot Lions fans say) and ended up kicking it OVER his head.

For goodness sake the guy is 19 years old. He will turn 20 after Christmas. He has loads of improvement left in him no doubt. I think they work him too up the ground. One of our biggest problems is that because our forward line gets sucked up the ground so much when he rebound the Footy there is nothing to kick to. With so much space available we need a good lead up forward to kick too. Keplar is too slow to handle it alone.
 
Mello was only 17 when drafted, very young and raw but he knows what's important and he goes when it's his turn. Can kick a goal too, as justified by his being the leading goal scorer in the TAC cup for his year. When he has a few more preseasons in the gym he's going to be something.

I thought it was weak that he didn't play on with a torn hamstring yesterday also. You do know that it's not the players choice to get subbed off right? And that they have ice baths and physio to reduce inflammation for recovery?
