May be a case of all of us getting slightly ahead of ourselves on the Fev trade. Typical media beat up saying he should go, shouldn't go, Carlton are weak, Carlton are strong, he will be traded, nobody wants him, etc.
Lets look at some simple facts on the negotiation process and what any good salesperson and/or procurement professional understands, namely:
1) A distressed seller is a buyers delight
-- If Carlton sacked Fev then they would be a distressed seller. The fact they have offered him for trade with an existing contract ensures a non-distressed seller. Fallback position is that they have scared the sh*t out of him, keep him and hopefully he finally pulls himself into line.
2) A distressed buyer is a sellers delight
-- If another club was very keen on Fev at this early stage then Carlton would be in a strong position to get "'äbove market odds'' and potentially take them to the cleaners for a deal. A good example is at a house auction if you show your keenness too soon and the auctioneer wioll play you like a violin (usually against another keen buyer).
Therefore why I believe we are in a reasonable position:
* First simple fact is that Fevola is worth every bit of his $700K pa contract. Fantastic full forward, All Australian who would more than likely provide the difference between a team who is almost there and will give prmiership a real shake.
* Clubs will not show their cards prior to first couple of days of trade week. Carlton should not panic - really have no need to.
* Every team apart from probably Adelaide, Hawthorn and funnily enough Brisbane would love to have him.
* He is a contracted player so worst case scenario is that no team can agree to terms/Carlton's requirements and we retain our gun FF with a slight dent in his pride that he may not be all he thinks!!! This may infact prompt a mutual agreement to get off the booze and hopefully some contractual obligation of sorts.
* We have some of the smartest people in our footy department (remember these are the guys that first of all convinced Judd to come to the club and then made the deal happen). Considering he arrived after we finished last the previous year - no mean feat.
I for one, do not want Fev to go but the simple facts are we do not know the whole story (and many never) so we need to trust in management at the club.
What I do not want to see and it would be worst case scenario is either:
1) Goes to scum at the filth or Essendon
2) Carlton FC trade him for anything other than a great deal.
Here's hoping!!!!!
