Is Neil Peart honestly THAT good? i was watching youtube vids and everyone there says he's better than buddy rich, and thats disgraceful...give me some rush tracks that are his best performances so i can judge if he really is a great...

Absolute technician and no doubt has chops and some great ideas from the limited amount of Rush i have heard. But IMO he has about as much groove and feel as a constipated arse and i can think of 100 drummers straight off the top of my head who i'd prefer to listen to and watch.

It's a serious debate for me these days. I used to think he was the greatest drummer on the face of the planet, bar none, and nothing could dissuade me from that way of thinking. Time has past and I realize that there are many, many drummers who can outplay him in their sleep (I could name at least 20 right now, just off the top of my head).

BUT....

He remains my absolute, all time, 'no one can touch him' favourite drummer in the universe. Why? a) His influence over me early on as a player. He is basically the very reason I play the drums. I have him to thank (or blame!) for the last 20 years of assaulting the skins.
and b) Achievement, in the field of drumming and music. Virtually no one can touch him for this. 33 years in the same band, 20 high quality studio albums, 6 official double live album, 50 million album sales, numerous massive sellout arena tours, grammys, Junos, the most awarded drummer in Modern Drummer mags history (I think) etc etc etc etc............

It's the whole best vs favourite conundrum. But for me, 'favourite' is absolutely clear cut....
