I'm sure to upset a number of people here but after doing a reasonable amount of research into this guy and listening to a number of his better known and regarded songs I am not entirely sure how this guy is regarded so highly in musical circles. He has been around as long as bands such as the Stones and appears to have had a vast influence on a majority of bands and is lauded by music critics and while some of his songs are pretty good their doesn't seem to be that many that justify his place to me anyway.

It's a matter of personal taste. I'm sure his voice turns some people off, but to others it's real and from the heart. He made some great albums back in his pre-CSNY days that shouldn't be overlooked. I love his guitar playing - ragged, jagged, and straight from the gut. He's made some uneven albums, but some terrific one's too. For my money he's one of the greats.

Lets face reality. "Artiste x overrated" is the lowest form of music talk. So you don't like Neil Young or the Jonas Bothers etc etc? No big deal but that neither makes them over or underrated. It just makes for meaningless conversation by the majority who seemingly would rather talk about what they don't like but in reality do not actually understand.

It makes me think that people who post these "overrated" threads are very young or do have not a clue as to what makes an artist relevant for their times and also their influence in music history.

Still that is music talk sites the whole world over. Bereft of original thought and ideas. Thank goodness the artistes are not like that.

Anyway carry on with this appalling thread y'all.

No. Just... no.

He's rated because he was hugely influential and a lot of his stuff still stands up to this day. What ya call, y'know, timeless.

From Folk, Country, Rock and Grunge, neil covers it all pretty well in my view although Im more absorbed in his earlier days with CSNY and his ealry folk albums..

Certainly a legend in my book but I'm comfortable with the fact that some people wont get him.

Hmm... One of the greatest songwriters of all time that could walk down the street in just about any city in the world without any more than maybe one or two people recognising him... Is OVERRATED?

Only a small minority of people actually appreciate Neil Young to begin with. Ask around amongst rock musicians and see how he's rated in those circles.

Just because YOU don't like someone doesn't mean they're overrated.

Why do you think there is a question mark after the thread title? I am merely obseving as YOU highlighted that to me he has not lived up to what many people have proclaimed him to be in my book and was wondering if any others felt the same. I'm not entirly sure about him being only appreciated by a minority also I think you would find it is quite the opposite as the general response in this thread displays.
I don't hate the guy as I have admitted I do like some of his songs and I like many of the genres he is involved in ranging from hard rock to folk and country rock but I just don't seem to see that same alure that many others have heard.

I love the guy and flew to Melbourne to see him earlier this year just in case he did not come to Perth with the BDO. As it happened, he came to Perth so I went to see him again.

He is to me the most influential musician that still has relevancy.

My wife is not a big fan but respects his influence on a lot of her favourite bands and loved his set at the BDO.

If anything, he is massively under rated.

Definitely underrated by the general public, who, in my experiences, generally consider A Horse with No Name to be his best work...

Based on that, the general public are pretty stupid.

I know it may sound similar to some of Young's work, but you'd think that people would have figured out by now, 40 years after the song came out, that it's not him.

This thread has gone on long without some classic Neil Young action:

Look at the way Bruce Springsteen looks at Neil Young in this video - It tells you everything you need to know about Young's influence. That, and the fact that Michael Stipe is willing to stand on the side of the stage, basically off-camera, and just sing backup.
