Hey guys,

Quick Tech problem I'm hoping you can help me with...

I have some sort of problem and I assume it is with the hardware itself.

Basically I have a Netgear Router which I connect my Bigpond ADSL modem to directly. From one of the out puts of the router I connect directly to my home computer. And I've been connecting my Laptop via the wireless signal when I'm using it.

However I've encountered some kind of problem... I had -what I believe- to have been a software problem on my laptop -but I buggered around with all the cables thinking that it was a hardware problem...

So after buggering about with the cables I've tried to fix things up and I'm getting nowhere. It is now DEFINITELY a hardware problem.

And it must be in the router itself.

If I connect the modem to the router and then to the computer -no Internet.

If I connect the modem directly to the computer I have Internet.

The router IS sending a signal, because my laptop picks it up.

But Vista shows me a diagram Laptop-----good-----Router------bad-------Internet. ie; the link between laptop/router is good. But the link between the Router/Internet is bad.

I can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong, I've tried unplugging it... And even tried hitting this "restore factory settings" button..

I really hope someone is able to point me in the right direction as its VERY frustrating.

Cheers.

At a guess I'd say you've got an DHCP or IP allocation issue. Find out what all of the IP addresses of the devices are (eg pc, laptop, router and modem). To get Internet, you have to have the ip address of the router as your gateway. I suspect that both the router and router are using static ips that are either the same (eg 192.168.0.1) or are on different networks.

To check the ip of the laptop, run ipconfig from a command prompt (type cmd in Start->Run). Do this when plugged into the router and then the modem.

Try switching off the Modem and router for at least 10 seconds, then switch on just the router, wait for 2 minutes then switch on the modem.

This fixes up my issues.

You can also try running diagnose and repair in Vista by clicking the 'red cross' symbol in the network diagram. It may tell you what's wrong or suggest what you can try.

I've worked the problem out further..

The internet light doesn't come on when I plug the internet in. But the connection is in properly.

I've taken it in and out so many times and turned the modem/router off and left them and restarted them in all kinds of combinations..

Please if anyone knows how to help... :)
