Got a call from an ex work college telling me he has a friend who has business opportunity and he is looking for key people. I agree to have a look, went last night.

Starts as a psudeo business seminar, a slick presentation about residual income and how working 9-5 sucks. Alarm bells are ringing, everyone is overly nice and they're spruiking a get rich scheme that works within 15 months.

Half way through the presentation, the clincher..."We use Amway as our distributor". Then sure enough at the end of the presentation in true MLM style all the "we've made lots money people" stand up go to the front and talk the scheme up. The funniest was Matt Rogers (rugby player) and his wife Chole Maxwell. It went something like this.. :D

Matt Rogers : "Me getting too old for rugby...me soon retire have no income, do this scheme make money, you should do it too"

Chloe Maxwell : "OMG I can have babies and not have to model and still make as much money, everyone should do this program"

At the end trying to get out of there without telling the friend to **** off. He gets me cornered with one of these "done well" guys. I ask a few questions on the relationship to Amway and he doesn't answer. I then ask on the costs and to break it down, they charge you $80 to get in. You have to then buy a starter pack from Amway (lol) which the cheapest is about $140. Then they're try and flog these training CD's at $58 p/m.

Tried my best not to laugh in there faces, before declining the offer and wishing I had that hour and half of my life back.

Has anyone else come across this crap?

Found some links via google on it, one is a version of the presentation they showed me last night. Link

The other is a website setup to rubbish it. Link

I remember once doing alot of work for a customer. They asked me to come along to a business seminer and I felt obliged to do so because they where paying me alot of money for the work I had done.

It was a trap - they must know it's pointless to use the words Amway when trying to get you along. They spring it later. I bought their crummy little pack - assured them I would do my best and added it to the bill.

I have good knowledge on the MLM industry.

What they did they have been doing since the early 80's in the US and not long after in Australia due to Amway having a bad name.

MLM as a concept is brilliant. Problem is, the tactics and methodology a lot of companies use is poor and alienates a lot of people

My wife and I moved house once and landed next to one of the nicest couples we have ever met. Nothing was too much trouble for them. That is until I discovered the woman was 'grooming' my wife (who innocently thought she was just being friendly) for one of these schemes. We politely but firmly said that we were not interested but she wouldn't take no for an answer. It took for me to nearly come to blows with the husband before she would desist!

and therein lies the problem. If these people were just genuinely your friends eventually you would have noticed what they were doing and probably asked about it. Then when they told you if you showed some interest they could give you some more info, if you didn't they got a couple of wicked new friends which is never a bad thing.

People like this screw the whole concept for other people

Agree, however another problem I experienced is that the products or services being offered through the MLM network have to be attractive enough for people to buy them. Expecting (convincing?) people to change their buying habits from purchasing say Colgate to Scamway toothpaste can be a hard way to make money.

You CAN make money with this. People DO make money with this.

I just wouldn't want to make my money doing this.

Yeah you would pretty much alienate everyone you know.

bloody good washing powder though

Ha. Is it?
I found another page on Network 21 that gives a price comparison of some of the products vs retail
http://network21amway.blogspot.com/ and the scams.
It says the Amway products are actualy a lot more expensive than retail??

I'm not a big fan of these mlm networks. Ability to make me money or not.
