Richmond will strengthen its proud father-son tradition with Andrew Raines and Tommy Roach set to wear the numbers their fathers made famous.

Raines will the wear No. 4 next year, the number his father Geoff wore in three best and fairest years and the 1980 premiership, while Roach takes over the No.8 in which father Michael became seven-time leading goal kicker and key member of the 1980 Premiership side.

While the No. 4 guernsey became available with Matthew Rogers retirement, Kane Pettifer who offered his guernsey to Roach.

Both Michael Roach and Geoff Raines are thrilled their sons will spend their careers in the same numbers they wore to premiership success.

"I'm rapt Andrew will be wearing it too, because I know it's something he's been striving for...the whole way through his junior career he wore No.4... and I hope he can carve out his own identity in at Tigerland," Raines said.

All four of Richmond's father-son players including Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden will now wear the same numbers their fathers wore at Punt Road.

lmfaooooo@endorsing a tradition of sons failing to live up to the image of their fathers.

Give me a player who's old man is a bum anyday.

I wore Roachies number on my back as a kid but find that i dont let it obscure me in my assessments of Tom.

Some people are excited about him yet i havent seen anything yet (Too early I know). David Bourke found out that you couldn't get any extra points for being the son of a legend when it comes to his reputation.

Although when it came to salary they probably saw Francis with blood gushing from his eye sitting in front of them.

Richmond know the good days are long time ago and Im a little scepticle when i see the numbers being handed over to the players.

I agree i have seen nothing to get remotely excited about Roach. But hey i'll give him two more years before i call for this blood.

However i see nothing wrong with the idea of giving the numbers of the dads to the kids - what harm is it going to do ? and if anything it might get some extra media coverage which is only good for current and future sponsors.

Get the name out there as much as possible I say.

Thats what they are doing. They are accutely aware there are a number of people who hold on to the good old days and are only just holding on.

I never thought i would talk about the good old days in my early thirties.

Good idea and PR IMO. Can't underestimate a Son's desire to make their Father proud and live up to the reputation set by them. Regardless of whether they are as good as their Fathers I'd reckon it'd make them run 1% faster and hit % harder. My old duffle coat with the numbers 8 and 4 can come out of the mothballs, although I doubt it'd fit me now. I'd have to cover up the Cloke badge.

Big question mark over T.Roach, turns the ball over, tries to do to much and easily bumped off the footy. Reminds me of Clarke for Geelong and then Carlton.

The young Raines is slightly better, but only watched him run around for Coburg. Appears o.k in traffic, got pace, but there is a query over his disposal.
