Rugby League has secured a new international television deal that will guarantee access to key markets including the UK, USA, Asia and the Pacific.

The five-year agreement with IMG Media will ensure fans overseas have world-wide access to all Telstra Premiership matches as well as State of Origin, Test matches played in Australia, AAMI City-Country and the Harvey Norman All Stars.
The partnership covers free-to-air television, subscription television, IPTV, mobile, in-ship, in-flight and gaming rights, as well as access to the NRL Films archive, and will provide international fans

What this means for International viewers:

• Guaranteed television coverage in key markets including the UK, USA, Asia, and Pacific;
• Access to all games in HD either through television or online platforms, as well as access to a 30-minute weekly highlights show;
• A free digital NRL Channel for international fans featuring match vision and a mobile NRL app;
• All NRL and State of Origin matches available on a live or near-live basis via television or online, mobile applications, smart TVs or other media platforms;
• International fans in regions where there is no TV or IPTV rights deals in place will be able to access matches for free on a leading web destination, such as YouTube or USTREAM.

More importantly, whats this mean for the international game? Is the money generated from this new deal going back into the international game or are the Australians keeping this just as they did with the 2000 WC money?

The NRL international TV rights deal money will go to the NRL, just like the international TV rights of the Super League go back into the RFL.

These rights do not include the World Cup rights or overseas test matches. Which is within this article. Not sure of the logical behind NRL rights going to anyone else other than the NRL.

As it stands, the local domestic competitions make the profit off test matches with a proportion of it going to the opposition. It means when events like Australia v USA happened a few years ago, the USA's AMNRL took the majority of the money instead of sharing it every other test playing nation.

Although I do agree all internationals should go to all nations playing, the RLIF needs a overhaul and needs to become a independent organisation first.
