Sooner than that. After their first title, IIRC. May have happened around 1994?
That look will grow on a lot of other people, too-- but at least it doesn't look as cartoonish as a lot of new logos around American sports are looking nowadays.
My view from over there, admittedly, is a bit removed from what it used to be, but hopefully there's a move back to the "simple is best" philosophy.

It's all oriental and shiznit. I realized they've tried to get the whole rockets thing happening there, but it looks more like dripping blood to me... right after Yao has decapitated Shaq with his samurai sword.
They could probably do with an additional colour or two, then it could really grow on me.

That would be considered "retro", by today's standards.
Going back to what Matty said, I don't the San Antonio Spurs have changed their logo for quite some time, since they were in the ABA. Unless I'm mistaken, and did so in the very recent past.
My point is, it's simple, yet expressive and vibrant, and thus no need to update it.
What kind of changes were made, Matty? Can you post a "now" versus "then" comparison?

Yeah, we went back to the old ABA logo:

The new logo is a hit with the fans.
