Listening to Voss calling us the "next powerhouse" has me a little excited and a little concerned at the same time.
He did have a grin on his face when he said it, so I'm a little less convinced he actually means it. I think he's trying to set us up for a big fall this weekend. He really needs a win and talking up the team he is playing this weekend is obviously a ploy on his behalf.
As a Melbourne member and supporter for my whole 36 years of life, i have the right to feel really excited about this group of players coming through. I've seen no success at all following this club, so getting excited amongst all the hype surrounding us at the moment feels pretty darn good. Being married now and having my first child earlier this year, the one thing left in my life i really want to do or see, is the MFC winning a premiership.
However, to call us the next powerhouse is very premature. We as supporters can certainly buy into it as it's what we want to hear. But i truly hope all this hype and talk isn't seeping into the players and coaches heads. We couldn't win a flag with 12 teams in the comp(post '64), we couldn't win a flag with 16 teams in the comp, and now there will be 18 teams vying to win a premiership. It ain't just gonna happen.
Kangas, Blues, Bombers, Dockers, Eagles, Crows, Gold Coast and West Sydney will all claim to have as good a young list as us in the coming years. And don't forget the top 4 or 5 at the moment could lay claims to having a list that could see them compete for another 4-5 years in finals. Winning a premiership is bloody tough as we know, you need a lot of skill but also a lot of luck. Being labelled the next powerhouse on the back of a big win against an out of sorts Sydney is a bit rediculous in reality. Don't get me wrong, I'm revelling in the excitement, but as a club we cannot just expect it to happen, but damn it's gonna be an exciting finding out...
