It's back, the Blitz series hits consoles after being lost to the world for some time with the unfortunate demise of Midway. God damn was this series awesome back in the day, the last effort of Midway was Blitz the League 2 which had some of the magic but was definitely lacking what made it great back in the day.

The best part is that Blitz is coming as a downloadable title to both PSN and XBLA. And it looks to have all the crazy of the NBA Jam series.

Will be around $20.

The high-definition update arrives in January for both Xbox Live Arcade (1200 Microsoft Points) and PlayStation Network ($14.99), and maintains the 7-on-7 gameplay from the original series.

Similar to NBA Jam, NFL Blitz will have an expanded single-player mode called the Blitz Gauntlet, which sees players fighting through a series of teams, in addition to “exclusive fantasy bosses.” Two people can play on a team simultaneously, with up to four total, and that extends to online.

EA also seems to be incorporating its popular Ultimate Team concept from its other sports games into NFL Blitz, calling it the Elite League here.

Closing Comments

The lack of late hits and the inability to change the length of games don’t take away from the fact NFL Blitz is a whole lot of fun. Compounded by the fantastic announcers and ongoing unlocks, NFL Blitz is a great sports experience folded into a downloadable package.

9.0 Presentation
The NFL returns to Blitz in a good way, and the crazy unlocks and catching on fire make it fun.

8.5 Graphics
NFL Blitz is a good-looking downloadable game with animations reminiscent of the old arcade days.

9.0 Sound
The announcers are stupendous.

8.5 Gameplay
While you can’t change how long you play or customize games, the playing is mighty fun.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
If NFL Blitz can keep an active online community, it’ll be a fun competition going into the future, and for battles of 4-player local co-op.

OVERALL 8.5

Will have to give the demo a go. Have heard the game is slower compared to the originals and is pretty bland. Hopefully it's half decent but IGN's 8.5 seems a little high.

Tried to find it today and found out that it's only being released in North America and Canada...
