I did some impulse buying at JB on Friday evening and picked up a copy of NHL 09' for $79. I played the demo for a good 15 minutes and was quite impressed, so I thought I would give it a go. Upon getting home I checked out some reviews and saw that it has a consistent 85-90% rating across most sites :thumbsu:

I have played it quite a bit over the weekend and it has not disappointed! It's beens years since I've bought an NHL game and it's great to get into such a quality title.

Has anyone else picked it up yet?

i d/l the demo and thought it was pretty cool but i doubt i will buy considering the unbelievable amount of games coming out soon...i simply won't play it as good as it is

and to add to your writing of consistently high reviews...many places have written that it is the best sporting game ever made....
so not much praises there aye :P

Yep, got it last week, just downloading music at the moment to put into the game. This is for the 360 version.
Enjoying it so far, 3rd line winger for the Pens at the moment.

I hate the fact that the PC only gets a shoddy version of new EA Sports games. It's about 90% confirmed that the PC version of NHL 09, coming out in December, won't be "next-gen". This game does look great. The be a pro mode looks awesome.

Am I the only person that doesn't get into all of these "Be A Pro" modes? I'm just playing a regular dynasty with the Dallas Stars.

I must admit that I've never played one before but it looks quite fun.

PES 2009 has one so I'll give it a shot there, albeit in a different sport.

You wouldn't be the only one no but for someone who only really buys Ice Hockey games and has to listen to Madden fans talk up the superstar mode it's a nice change of pace.

Yeah, picked it up last week, started a dynasty mode...... after a few games i thought i'd try out be a pro to see how different it would be controlling a sole player ala the be a pro mode in fifa. It's pretty addictive and so far i've played about 80 more games of be a pro mode.... compared to dynasty or online.

Chose the (formerly Mighty) Ducks. Started off in Iowa, took ages to get recognised by the Ducks, had a few games for them... got demoted, kicked more arse with Iowa, get promoted to the Ducks..... got demoted 4 games later. Went on a downward spiral with Iowa and wound up on the fourth line (as a defensive forward). Eventually rose up the ranks again, and got another call up to the Ducks. So far i've held my spot and have graduated up to the first line in the side :thumbsu:

Love it!

What happens when you are on the bench? If you are a fourth liner then surely that'd be a fairly long time? Do you have the option to watch the match or skip it?

The way I've got mine set up is that I go to the bench when tired but will call to come on when rested. Currently on 3rd line, but what ever line you are on starts the match so you can get plenty of ice time.
But also in regards to going off etc, you can set it so you would play the whole game instead of having rests.

Im downloading as we speak, I like having to play in the minors if you not up to scratch. All this talk just made me download the demo. Excited now

Being able to play the whole game sounds pretty unrealistic though. I'd like the feeling of starting off as a 4th liner without much game time.

I was thinking the same thing. I mean if you were on the 4th choice line you wouldn't be starting, the team would just go crap (theoretically anyway) if that happened.

It would be a lot better to start off with little game time and try and impress when you are on the ice. Then you can try and work your way into the first choice line. That would be far more challenging and rewarding.

They do seem to have weird criteria for 'performing well' during a match, i know it is down to position and what you actually do (if i can't score, i try to get as many hits and assists as possible). I've been dropped down to the AHL side a few times as a result of performing crap when i was on the fourth line in the NHL team :p

Got a heap of play over the weekend and am about 50-60 games into my first dynasty season with Dallas.

I've got the third or fourth worst record in the NHL which I actually don't mind, because it's telling me the game has a steeper learning curve than usual and it throws up a bit of a challenge! Bring on the draft :D

Three months since my last post in this thread and I'm still playing the game! Quite simply I think it's one of the best games I have ever played on any platform. I love it.

The first season I finished with the third or fourth record in the NHL, but I was playing on the top difficulty level and still getting a handle for the game!

The second season I only just missed the playoffs by a handful of games.

The third season I won about 10 of my final 12 games to top the Western Conference. I beat the Ducks in 5 exciting games, then swept the Oilers and came from behind to beat the Canucks in six of seven for the conference title.

The Stanley Cup Finals against Ottawa were horrible. I lost the first three games by a single goal. They were all so closely fought too. I won the next two, but was then trounced in game six to end my run to the title.

In season four I'm a few points off leading the west again around the half-way mark. Jordan Staal has scored 35 of my goals as my #1 center - he's an absolute machine!! Ribiero and RIchards have about 15-20 each and Morrow, Wolski and Lehtinen are around 10-12 a piece.

My goaltending has been a head scratcher. I gave Turco a four year extension, but he is inconsistent. He has an amazing SIX shutouts so far (the next best goalie has 1), but his overall save percentage is horrendous. The difference between his best and his worst is staggering, so I often play Justin Pogge (who I signed from waivers in season three) for extended periods of time.

Grest game!!!!

I'm the same, have heard nothing but great things, but just don't know if I want to get it, the last hockey title I played was Wayne Gretzky's, now THAT was awesome!

Never played it online. I'm so immersed in the dynasty I never really thought about it.

PS - I don't recommend playing drunk. I just got home from a big night out, it's 4am and I couldn't sleep, so I played a game. Went 3-0 down to Colorado before getting two cheap goals late in the third and lost 3-2.

I prefer it over fifa.

A game will help you understand the rules far more than just watching it. It's how I got to understand American Football. If you have a basic grasp of how the offside rule works, than you will be fine playing it.

Definitely worth it.

You can also Be A Pro - Goalie mode, which is fun for a few games, but it was a little boring when the puck was down the other end for so long.

Yep! Coming from a soccer background the offside rule is completely different. Just make sure none of your players are in your offensive zone when the puck goes in and you're right :thumbsu:

Offside rule in ice hockey is a lot easier to understand than the football offside. I have a good grasp on the football version but anyone new to the game doesn't have much chance but ice hockey is fairly straight forward.

Im fine with all the rules im just not sure about which players are good. Well i know who the good good players are but i wouldnt know anyone who could provide depth in a team or anything like that. Thats the only thing holding me back from getting it
