I wasn't too disappointed with the result tonight. You could see in the second half that the boys were tiring by the minute. The big bodies of Rodan, Surjan and co were too strong for all our rookies.

Anyway, I was enormously impressed with young Nic Suban again. 11 kicks, 3 handballs and 3 tackles doesn't tell the whole story, but I thought he was important at crucial stages and really took the game on. Not a flashy player like Hill is, but I can see this guy being a 150+ game player.

That split round can't come soon enough, hey? With Campbell concussed, I think even my (ex) buddy might survive the chop if we had to play next week.

His second half was very polished and he is a very good player. His right foot may need some work but I think his decision making is wuite good normally its just often he gets it under immense pressure or has no one to kick too. He will be a star for us though.

His best game so far I reckon. He really stepped up and won important contests at crucial stages in the 2nd half.

Tough, skillful and composed - he really does look like the complete package. Not to mention his much talked about leadership qualities.

With Clarke developing well in the WAFL it's starting to look like sooky-la-la Warnock leaving is the best thing that could have happened to us.

Not altogether sold.

Went missing in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Has been ok to good for a first year player, but I'm having trouble separating his faults in games with his overall faults as a player. Lack of awareness is his biggest problem I feel. Looks rushed when most of the time there is no need.

Signs are good... but definitely no guarantee at this stage of a future as a gun.

Not on the same plain as Hill and Walters at this (early) stage.

I was impressed by him, though I only watched from the halfway point of the second quarter onwards

Good to see I'm not the only one who isn't convinced. I think Suban will be a good player, but I don't think he has shown anything to suggest he will be anything more than that.

He goes missing far too much, and I don't really think he works hard enough. Both Walters and Pearce worked much harder than Suban did tonight, in particular Walters.

As chops said, he does seem to have a slight lack of awareness some times and he does seem to be quite rushed at times. But I think his decision making is his biggest problem. The majority of the time he just bangs the ball on his boot without looking. He needs to lower his eyes and kick to a player, not to an area.

I have faith he will be a very good player and leader for Fremantle, but at this stage I don't think he has shown anything to suggest that this will be a given.

Stats back up the belief he has been largely ineffectual.

Disagree he had a good game. But it was ok by his and a first year standard.

Well I'm in the not convinced camp yet either. Don't get me wrong he's set a very solid foundation down to build on. A great debut few months and solid enough tonight ... he looks like he's got the aptitude to learn and grow from this so things are looking up, but he's no gun buy any stretch yet.

Pros:
- Good user of his body in a contest
- Courageous player
- For a young guy is exceptional one on one if up against a similar type player
- Has good close in speed
- Quick hands
- Disciplined
- Seems to have a good head on his shoulders
- Can kick a long way

Questionable (at this stage):
- Can float out of the game (though often given defensive assignments so fair play on that one)
- Isn't the most accurate disposer of the ball
- Still picking up the pace of the game ... like Chops said, he seems to rush things when he doesn't need to.

I reckon he is Solly Mk II. Cant see him being a game breaker, but someone with physical presence, workman like attitude, and decent enough with the skills. Has a nice long kick, composer, and has kicked a couple of goals.

The kids a leader and I've got no problems with his work rate.

He's getting a major role in defense each week and it's harder to look composed in that situation as opposed to being a FP like Walters was tonight.

It's their first years so I don't think any one should "convince you" but injuries permitting he'll be at least a 150 game player. Hopefully all for our club.

Gee there are some hard markers here. First year player, better than half the guys 5 years older. Tough as nails. Defended his arse off in the 3rd & 4th when we under siege. Didn't give away free, didn't panic, kept mopping up. I reckon he's a freaking jet.

Seems to me that a future gun is over the top. can see him being in our top 10 for the years to came. maybe, might be our next captain. Pavlich to play another 5 years hopefully.

love his approach and his second/third efforts.

If we are going to be avery good team - we need the stars but we also need the level headed guys who bring something to the table.

To me Suban is pretty cool under pressure and has a very good kick on him.

At the moment I am confident that he will be an important part of the Freo puzzle moving forward.

Pearce is another that I see providing that workman type performance.

Tonight was about Walters for me ...he is one skilled individual, and I can really see him creating havoc as he develops with Ballantyne, Mayne and Hill.

If you guys don't want him, we'll swap Staker for him , hey we'll even throw Seaby in :D, watching him last night he looks like he's going to be a good player. Sure he made some errors and faded in and out, but as they say say he's only young and can get better with time. You guys definately have a good one their.

I'm glad I'm not the only one Moo. He is perhaps our most highly skilled draftee... How did we get him there? Crazy stuff.

Love it how some Eagles fans think he was nothing special... my arse...

You don't have to be flashy to be a good player. Suban looks and plays older than he is, and it can only get better in the coming years. Something has suddenly changed in season 2009 for me - I don't really care if we lose as long as the effort is there and we are playing the youngsters. Last night was the most satisfied I've felt after a loss in a long time. (compared to last week when I snapped the tape in half :o)

Hill looked tired last night - no doubt owing to his hip injury. I reckon the split round has come at a crucial time for us.

Height and poor fitness is how we got him there (Praise to conditioning staff to get him looking pretty fit this year), but before the draft I rated him only behind Hill of the players we eventually ended up drafting, and I haven't changed my opinion on that.

Suban is also what I expected so far - a very good small defender who can either play lockdown or as a playmaker from defence. I had had slight hopes for him to become a midfielder, but I pretty much convinced now that he will be much better if they settle him in as a Back Pocket / Half Back Flank for the rest of his career.

I agree, his defensive skills are first class, he is generally one touch (even in the wet last night he had poise) and his kicking is very good. Given experience he should take the kick ins.

Fittness will determine whether he moves into the midfield (Head should be banned from this duty and even better from the team)

This guy is going to be very good player.

I think after Palmer and a lesser extent Hill we have come to expect too much from our first year players.

Suban has not only held his spot but with a full squad would more than likely still be getting a game. He is consistently in the better half of our team and his long kicking is a highlight for me.

Some of his decisions under pressure are questionable, but at 18 that can be forgiven.

Agree with the above. Suban seems to be progressing nicely and can't wait to see him in 2-3 years time.

Future gun for sure for me.... the key word there all you nay sayers is "future"

He does his job consistently, above average decision making, doesn't shirk a contest or the hard ball and never bloody gives up. This is more than we can say for more than half our players at the moment. Suban looks to bleed purple and I'll glady have him in our team for the next ten years.

The only things I think he needs to work at are consistency in his kicking, when it all goes right god its beautiful. He also over commits occasionally when trying to lay tackles and his opponent gets away. But all said, future jet for sure IMO.
