With the loss of Lenny Hayes, and terribly poor form of the Saints for the first third of the season, middling form of Goddard, Montagna and Riewoldt, Nick Dal Santo was just superb all season.

Early in 2011 he copped a heavier tag from opposition than usual and this helped him take his game to a higher level. The man just thrived under the challenge, resulting in a strong 2nd placing in the Brownlow medal and Club Best and Fairest.

Dal was a runnaway winner of the BigFooty Best and Fairest award with almost double the votes of the second placed Ben McEvoy and Goddard third

Nick gained the highest stats for the club in Kicks, Handpasses, Disposals, Clearances, Bounces and Contested Possessions. He was second in Tackles to Clint Jones. Dal has often been considered an outside player but his stats show him to be the most effective inside player at the club.

He gained 25 free kicks over the year, while he gave away only 12 (by comparison Armo was given 36 frees and gave away the same number).

This season may have been the best of Dal's career, and yet he unluckily fell short by a tiny margin of winning the club best and fairest award, the Trevor Barker medal.
I can't see him dropping in form just yet. He will benefit by the return of Lenny Hayes and a fitter midfield, and he will be rejeuvenated by the addition of new blood into the squad and assisting the development of some talented young midfielders coming through who no doubt will hang on his every word.

Thought he deserved the B&F. We wouldn't have gone anywhere without him...

It's a shame that he'll likely end his career without one. Has definitely deserved one IMO.

Gun. Hope he can keep up the form for a couple more years at least!

Congratulations Nick Dal Santo & Julie Klein on your recent engagement. Nick popped the question on an island in Hawaii.

2012 End of Season Review

DAL SANTO, Nick
AFL Matches: 22
AFL Goals: 17
AFL Kicks Per Match: 12.5 (5th at St Kilda)
AFL Hand-passes Per Match: 10.8 (3rd at St Kilda)
AFL Marks Per Match: 2.8
AFL Contested Possessions Per Match: 10.6 (2nd at St Kilda)
AFL Clearances Per Match: 4.5 (2nd when comparing players who have played at least 5 matches)
In 2012, Nick Dal Santo again showed why he is one of the premier midfielders in the AFL. Despite a fairly inconsistent year, Dal finished inside the Top 10 of the Saints Best & Fairest after playing all of the Saints 22 matches. Dal Santo struggled to break a tag, however when he was playing unaccountable football the silky left-footer was at his damaging best. Dal Santo was a prominent figure in a Saints midfield already boasting the likes of Lenny Hayes and Leigh Montagna. Dal Santo was fantastic in most components of the game, ranking in the Top 5 at the Saints for kicks, hand-passes, clearances, uncontested possessions, contested possessions and disposals. Furthermore, Nick developed his ability as a goal-kicking midfielder, booting 17 goals, his highest return in that part of his game.

Overall, 2012 was a solid season for the Saints’ star. While many of his games caused frustration for fans and coaches, just as many games were there to highlight his brilliance and style. Dal Santo was upset to miss out on September action, however he will look to use these emotions to fuel his preparations for the 2013 season.
Season Rating: 7.5/10

Nick Dal Santo is committed to playing for St Kilda next season and is all but certain to do so, despite featuring on the list of free agents sent to clubs by the AFL last week.
Dal Santo's contract expires this season, hence his status as a restricted free agent, but his contract contains a trigger clause for next season that the club and the midfielder consider part of his current deal.
It is understood the 29-year-old must simply receive a medical clearance at the end of this season for the one-year extension to kick in, with both Dal Santo and the Saints intending to continue their 12-year relationship.
Dal Santo has proved to be one of St Kilda's most durable players in his 238-game career, missing just three matches in the past nine years and never more than one at a time after suffering three separate quad injuries in his second season - 2002.

Dal Santo says it hasn’t crossed his mind to leave the Saints and chase an elusive premiership with a rival club.

Despite being listed as a restricted free agent, Dal Santo, 29, has a clause in his contract that guarantees him another season at the Saints provided he passes a medical at the end of this year.

Dal Santo denied he would look elsewhere at the end of this year. "To be completely honest, I’ve never thought about it,"

"I’ve been there since I was 17. I love the club, I love the boys and it’s round nine. I’m in no position and I’ve got a contract, I’m still in contract, it’s not even a thought at this stage.

"I’m still in contract, I signed a four-year deal, with a trigger, which basically protects the club. It means if I broke my leg, broke my back and or couldn’t play, my last year of that contract wouldn’t be there."

"I need to improve my form, I accept that and we need to get better as a club."
