I don't usually post more than 1 thread in a day but I've re-discovered his music and it is just brilliant.

Was sort of an earlier Elliott Smith..

Anyway.

my fave tracks are....

Place to be, clothes of sand, winter is gone and hazey jane II.

his music didn't really grab me to begin with a long while back, but then i re-listened again it clicked for me.

a pretty damn good career for a guy who only lived til his early-mid 20s.

Definitely a fan. Quality artist.

I visited a mate's place recently and I thought he had Nick Drake on, but I did not recognise any of the songs. It was actually Ray Lamontagne who probably has a better voice than Nick Drake. I imagine you guys on this thread have heard him but if not, check him out.

Was sort of an earlier Elliott Smith..

In more ways than one, sadly.

His guitar playing is interesting, in that it doesn't sound so technically amazing, until such time as you pick up a guitar and try to work out what he's doing, and than you go "WTF"

it's a shame he didn't really get popular til after he died. a few years ago it seemed as though the whole world fell in love with him at once. bloody great muso, though.

The song Fruit Tree sums this up perfectly.

Strangely enough, I discovered both Drake and Elliott Smith through 'random whim purchases'- and they were both posthumous odds and sods collections (Made to Love Magic and From A Basement on the Hill), before I investigated the back catalogues.

Drake is a quality artist. Favourite album would be Bryter Layter. I think they got the mix right here, between Drakes songwriting accessability, the mood of the album and the balance of the flutes etc in relation to Drake and his guitar. Then, closely followed would be Pink Moon. Stripped back at midnight, with just a guitar, how great is Nick Drake? I love how sparse it is. Five Leaves Left is a great album too, but I just think the orchestral arrangements are too prominent at times.

I heard that he was upset that he didn't 'get through' to his generation. Probably his own fault because, in general, when you go to see a show, you don't expect to see a quivvering, nervous wreck spending 20 minutes between songs retuning his guitar in an obscure way. This was the summer of free love and rocking tunes afterall - did many people really want to see a shy, retiring middle class boy whispering sorrowfully alone on stage? Possibly not.

Still though, recorded output - Nick stands the test of time.
