He's a great player, but probably hasn't been used to great effect, i.e. could have been switched to defence when his kicking for goal was shot(rumor that he might have been injured??)
I think he was chucked into the captaincy too early, had to be nursed through it at times.
But all in all, because of injury and his version of poor form, i'd say he's still a reliable player at the least. will be 23 next season, and without the added pressure to perform as captain, can concentrate more on his game. :)

yer, be better without one of the best CHF's and players in the game. :thumbsd:
He had an injury riddled year but looking at '04 he will be back better then ever in '06.

Though, if you want to trade him to us.........

what do saints fans actually think of rotating captains? i found it annoying doing it during this year.

They can't be serious!!! Better of without him??? Are we talking about the bloke, who 12 months ago, was voted by his peers the most valuable player in the competition??

He has had what everyone would agree was a pretty ordinary season, injuries played a big part in the big blonde one not performing up to the high levels expected of him.

However he did still post decent numbers, 141 marks from 16 games and 65 shots at goal. His kicking was atrocious this season, however had he kicked at the same percentage as last year he would have kicked 45 goals this year.

So for a bloke that had an ordinary year he's actually produced a season many players would be very proud of. He will be better for the off season break and should have a sensational 2006.

To all those St Kilda supporters Charlie Beagle knows, you are truly fickle if you believe our side is better with out Riewoldt.

For 3 years now commentators have ridiculed St Kilda's rotational captaincy, suggesting that premiership sides need great leaders who have been settled in the role of captain.

For the second year in a row a side has won the premiership with a stand in captain. The swans had numerous men filling the role this year, i think it supports the theory a strong leadership group rather than just a strong leader is most important in winning flags.

yes the biggest benefit seemed to be in sydneys case it created a lot more leaders. I still think riewoldt might have been the wrong choice for this year, if i were grant thomas id be tempted to give the job to harvey for his last year, though you all probably dont like that idea.

I rate it. Hope they win next year with banger as captain racking up 35 touches and ten tackles in his last game :) . Would be an awesome fairytale career finish for one of the best players to ever pull on a saints or AFL/VFL jumper. Kozi or Bally will be more likely options.

and leaders is why thommo brought it in, in the past at our club it's been left up to the same 2 or 3 guys. I dont' know about roo being too young, after seeing this year I tend to agree, but who knows what may have happened had he not had such a horror year with his injuries. However i do rate rotating captains for the simple reason that without it, i think roo would most surely be captain for 10 years. Although he's a class A player, i can't wait to see Kosi and Ball captain the club, those guys seem born to do it.

Is roo overrated? well personally i think he is a tad..if only he could bloody kick straight, and he doesn't seem the type to get at the bottom of the packs..kosi on the other hand...geez i'm glad we've got them both :)

Definately a gun player and to say he's we're better off with him not in the team is just rediculous. However i really do not believe CHF is his position as hes not built enough to play that position well.

Unfortunately GT refuses to play him anywhere else and then on top of that the side looks for him religously every time they go forward which makes the team awefully predictable. So in that sense i can understand fully why some may think he's better off not in the side as we do look better ALOT of the time with him not there.

Doubt anyone would question his athleticism and aerial capacity so i say let him play off the wing permanently and leave the forward line to hard at it, tough players like Hamill, Gehrig, Koschitzke etc ...

The way a forward line should be...

Besides even though this thread is about Riewoldt, Koschitzke is the player that can terrorize the forward line like no other imo and if GT(sigh) allows him to play there more permanently he COULD be the best thing since Carey.

Dont fall off your chair _ron_ but I agree with everything you say.

Riewoldt is a wingman and with the acquisition of Fergus Watts may well get to play there more often.

Unfortunately and dissapointingly the Saints didn't bolster their ruck stocks. this means Kosi will again be called upon in the ruck, only resting forward.

With a forward line of Hamill, Kosi, Watts, Reiwoldt, Gehrig, and Milne, with a Goddard or Montagna coming off the HFF, the flexibility of the forward line should be far greater, allowing Riewoldt to play on a Wing or a HFF (if Thomas wakes up to himself and plays him where he is most damaging).

I miss zone selections...

You had a zone, Riewoldt was outside it. If he was that keen to play with brisbane, he could have moved up the road, but didn't.

I wouldn't complain too much if i was you. 3 Flags, lots of compensation and concessions, and even your avatar was a father/son selection. Like how many games did his father play for the Brisbane Lions?

For a bloke that can't play the position well, he seems to fake it reasonably well, 70 goals in 2004 and in what everyone has deemed an ordinary year in 2005 he averaged 8 goals a game for 4 shots at goal a game.

I agree with GT, you play the best CHF in the game at CHF.

However you may be right that other options may be ignored in preference for a pass to Riewoldt.

We don't look better without him.

I believe the way we play Kossie is right, he has the ability to be the best ruckman in the comp and still be damaging as a resting forward much in the same vein as Spider.
