Nine dumps Wimbledon

about time too. Their coverage into WA has been nothing short of a disgrace in the past few years. I for one wouldnt mind if Fox or Ten (One HD) got the rights.

Would be even better if it was taken off the anti-siphoning list.

Will except One HD, Seven would destroy it.

Pretty weird that they've dumped Wimbledon but kept the US Open.

Hopefully ONE get the rights. However I don't think they'd have anyone who could commentate tennis.

The US open isn't on the anti-siphoning list and they just lift the Foxtel coverage, which i believe is the world feed anyway

I would love ONE to pick it up...

...but it still wouldn't make it a better coverage as it would all be up to Ten programmers to show it live as it is still on the anti-digital list meaning it will only be simulcast on ONE, not shown first on ONE.

Us in WA would still probably get it delayed so Masterchef and Glee would be shown first.

If it goes solely to foxtel I think I'm gonna have to fork out... hoping one gets it, even if it is still on the anti-siphoning list, I'm sure theyll put in a better effort than 9. Does anyone know how or if they're gonna get it off the list?

The quarter-finals onwards are on the anti-siphoning list for the US Open, same for Roland Garros.

Not surprised, throw away years and years of tradition for the network for a little bit of money, the people that run Nine make me sick, it was the same for the US Masters, lucky that was picked up by ONE/TEN. Sadly, I do not think that Wimbledon will be as lucky given its more expensive and is over a 2 week period. Hopefully Seven or Ten can make the gamble or maybe even the ABC.

Treatment of grand slam tennis on tv has been horrific lately and given the ratings which are not lackluster at all, AO rates fantastically each year, French Open final got 1.1 million viewers for crying out loud and even Wimbledon did alright given it was against the World Cup (the latter round of the women's was low but given how onesided that was, no surprising). It just show no class to tennis fans and sports fans in general.

I will find other methods to watch Wimbledon like I do with all other tournaments and with Nine's worse coverage I had been watching more online anyway but any FTA coverage is a loss for the sport, crap on how the coverage is bad and everything but it exposures the spot to everyone instead of a select few.

From rumours of this a month ago, supposedly Seven or Ten weren't interested in it, surely it would be a money thing for Ten/ONE because to have the rights to the biggest tennis tournament of the year is surely something they want.

Does anyone know how or if they're gonna get it off the list?

Wimbledon would never come off the list.

But the only way it will improve is if they allow sports on the list to be shown live on digital channels before the main channel. I am guessing that will only happen after the digital switchover is complete (So not until at least 2013).

Couldn't they just buy the commentary feed from the BBC or whoever does it in the states? Surely it wouldn't be that expensive as it would just be a bonus for the overseas networks to recover costs they have incurred anyway. It would be basically free money for them, Ten get Huddo to host from the studio here like they do the T20. Easy.

I fail to see why TEN/ONE don't want the rights to the biggest tournament of the year, it might be a bit expensive for them but honestly as long as they fix the anti-siphonign to allow them to show more on ONE, it would a huge coup, face it ONE needs more big events.

Ten doesn't have much money so I can understand if they didn't want to challenge Nine for the rights. But with Nine now pulling out and Seven showing little interest, they still might have a crack.

Great news! Hopefully more and more sports are dumped from FTA television.

Quality of coverage wise, yes, it will mean improvement. But this really is a bad state for the sport of tennis in this country, lack of FTA exposure will eventually hurt the sport as majority of people won't be able to able to watch the stars in the biggest tournament of the year, turning away possible potential fans. Think about only the diehard tennis and sports fans are going to watchit on Foxtel or vai other mean such as the Internet, for the casual fans interest it's going to hurt the sport in the long run. Especially given the tournament has such a huge tradition with our players, Australians have won a lot of Wimbledons right up to our most current one with Lleyton.

Just look at Sam's run to the French Open and how the last couple of matches got on FTA, it was news headlines for a few days, over a million people watched the final on Nine, people were talking about tennis for a few days. That's exactly the sort fo exposure we want for our sport, and of course an Australian is not going to make a final like that so often but having the sport's biggest tournaments hidden away on Pay TV will decrease the sports popularity.

Say what you wnat Seven's coverage of AO for the two weeks but it gets people interested in the game, that's why I'm not fussed with how poor the coverage is, if I can't watch a match on Seven I want to because they are being silly. I will it by other means while the sport is getting exposure.

A lot of people can't actually afford pay TV in this country either. I'm very disappointed to be honest, tennis is my favourite sport (bar football), and I love watching Wimby. I don't really like the idea of pay tv because I believe you don't get what you pay for, my parents will no way get it installed and I am a poor student, if I want it I'll have to pay for it myself, I really can't afford it. :(

What? So the majority of Australians have no coverage?

Wimbledon has to be on FTA in some form.

But FTA stations have been making a mockery of televising sport such as tennis.

Just look at Sam's run to the French Open and how the last couple of matches got on FTA, it was news headlines for a few days, over a million people watched the final on Nine, people were talking about tennis for a few days.
Tennis is so important to channel 7 that they couldn't be bothered showing Stosur's matches against Serena at the Australian Open (4th round) or the French Open (QF). If Sam didn't do well at the French, we may have seen little to no coverage at all on FTA television.

I sympathise. Each FTA network should have a sports channel, say 7 Sport, 9 Sport and 10 Sport. Leave the regular channels to show the usual crap they do, and the sports channels to show sport UNINTERRUPTED. No break for the news, current affairs, Neighbours, Home & Away or any of that crap.

Anyway, the future of television is (legitimate) streaming via the internet. Even still, it's not that hard to find a (not so legitimate) stream of sport. I watched 2-3 hours of Mamut v Isner on my computer, and I have Foxtel.
