I'm just listening to Nirvana's MTV Unplugged album, and it is 8am.

Nirvana is my second favorite band (just behind Pearl Jam), and I own every album they made.

So I was just wondering which album is their best in you opinion.

Mine is This unplugged album, closely followed by In Utero.

I go to sleep every night with the soft harmonies and gravelly voice of Kurt in the background, and I usually drop off by track 3. It is just a beautiful album, and it proves to those who say they were just noise, that they could really play, and do really good ballads.

The covers on this album are sensational, with 'Jesus Doesn't Want Me for A Sunbeam', 'Lake Of Fire', and the final track 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' standouts to me.

I love Nirvana, and I love all their albums (although Incesticide doesn't do much to me, but I still like it).

So what is your favorite Nirvana album and why?

The MTV unplugged idea got old pretty quickly. I would say that Nirvana's appearance was one of the best (along with Clapton)

Other than that I am not the biggest Nirvana fan. Kurt could write a great hook, and I suppose I am willing to listen to any one single Nirvana tune at any time. I rarely play an entire disc through.

When I watch the video of the unplugged performance I always get the feeling that Kurt was already planning to snuff himself. Overactive imagination?

After Nirvana ended, every fool quasi-grunge band wanted to be like them. They failed at this and so decided to all be like one another. Having said that, I think Cobain taking his own head off was both the best and worse thing to happen to music in the 90's.

As it is near enough to the anniversary of Kurdt Kobain's death, I thought it was interesting that Richmond had a bit of a tribute to them on their banner with the caption: "Smells Like Team Spirit"

Was that a joke or were you being serious?

Well, partly serious. I have never head of them but clearly by reading this thread I can tell it is a person, band or group that sing or make some sort of sound that is recorded and put on to albums. I shall ask my sons about it ;)

Ahhh....Son2 says it is heavy metal and I wouldn't like it . He has '******* in Ney York' (couldn't hear the first word over the bloody wrestling) and he reckons MTV Unplugged is best.

ah my god i used to be obsessed with Nirvana like worse than i am now with footy. Have absolutley (well almost) every little thing of Nirvana and Kurt! Some of my fave songs r Even in his Youth (rarity) Opinion (Pay to Play rarity) Negative Creep (Bleach version) and some of the duets Kurt did with Courtney were good and of course Holes best song eva is VIOLET i luv that song!!!

Gotta be Nevermind, its one of the best albums of the 90's and is a standout amongst the others. Although i do love Unplugged. Just a couple of days ago actually i learnt Drain You on the guitar. Good song and fun to play.

Excellent thread...as one of the biggest Nirvana fans you are ever likely to meet it's a good question.

All the albums have their strong points, Bleach shows some of their early promise, and considering it was recorded at the cost of $606.17 it's pretty good.

Nevermind is the pick of the bunch for me. People tend to overanalyse this album and its significance and how Kurt was the voice of a generation etc etc. Fact is this album just has 12 incredible good songs...it has no weak points at all - which is very rare even on a lot of good albums. The fact it also allowed so many other 'alternative' bands to be signed to major labels should not be underestimated.

Incesticide wasn't a studio album as such so sounds disjointed at times. Still, it has some killer tracks (Aneurysm, Sliver, Dive)

In Utero is a very rewarding album. The day I bought it I was disappointed - it's not as 'listener friendly' as Nevermind. But it's one of those albums that grows on you and it has some wonderful tracks (Heart shaped box, Frances Farmer, Dumb, tourettes, All Apologies). I also like the way Nirvana used a rougher production technique on In Utero cause they didn't care if they weren't radio friendly.

Unplugged is good in that it shows another side of the band, as well as a few great covers. It's not typical Nirvana but it's a great chill out album.

Wishkah is a bit disjointed like Incesticide because they took tracks from different performances. I was a bit disappointed with the track listing, they left off a lot of good live tracks. However, the 3 tracks from the Del Mar show in California (Drain You, Aneurysm, Smells Like Teen Spirit) are great.

So my favourite album would be Nevermind...hell, it's my favourite album of all time!

Favourite songs include, in no particular order: About a girl, Downer, Dive, Sliver, Aneurysm, Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Breed, Lithium, Territorial Pissings, Drain You, Lounge Act, Stay Away, Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb, All Apologies, tourettes, Even in His Youth, Opinion, D7 and On the Mountain.
