Interesting article on the impact of Noongar indigenous players within footy. Probably could have gone further with the players of the WAFL era and in making the point about how much the vic clubs lagged in accepting indigenous players. Some good stuff regarding Freo, Johnson, Clontarf, Mal Brown etc.

A rewarding read for Freo fans.

Wonderful article. I thought it would be alright but it was even better.

Really liked the way the article rolled through with the photos.

Nollamara have always been heavily populate with Noongar players. Hard, mob to play. Mick Rea coached them for a while

I think most of us who post here have long known and celebrated our Noongar men and women not just as regards to football but more importantly as part of the cultural identity of anyone born on Noongar land. Hopefully it can continue to become more broadly known and celebrated throughout Australia. Oh, and the Noongar Welcome to Country ceremony is by far the best in Australia but I will freely admit my bias in this case.

Mick Rea all the way, Mick Rea all the way repeat - fun days at Perth FC

All well and good to say it's a good thing but when will we realise the cultural differences of these people? They deserved to be applauded but they also deserve non-anglo-centric lenses of respect and empathy. Ie, looking at why Josh Simpson is the way he is, and the fact it does not make him a lazy or bad person.

The guy was a nimrod, making excuses for him just because he is indigenous is comical.

You think every culture is the same as your white one? Same standards?

You're basically a Nationals voter anyway so who cares.

I thought the entire point of this article is that Noongars have been so successful at footy because they are the indigenous group who have most successfully assimilated into modern Australian culture.

Josh Simpson is from Yalgoo which is not Noongar country, and the article specifically says that indigenous players from more remote areas have a harder time adjusting.
