NTFL Wrap-Up Round Seven:

Tiwi Bombers def. Central Australia

Tiwi Bombers managed to hold off a feisty Central Australia side to win by nine points in a high-scoring shoot out on Saturday at TIO Stadium. It was the battle of the saltwater over the desert in a match that had plenty of emotion in it. The Redtails looked the better side for most of the first half and took a small lead into the half time break. The Bombers kicked into gear in the third quarter to pile on ten goals for term. Both sides were able to play its usual free-flowing style of attacking football much to the delight of the spectators. At three quarter time the Bombers looked destined for a win but the boys from Alice Springs came out firing in the last quarter. Tiwi held its nerve to kick a couple of late goals and win 22.11 (143) to 20.14 (134). Dion Munkara gathered plenty of the football while the mercurial Liam Jurrah booted six goals. Gibson Turner was Central Australia’s best player with the ex-Richmond rookie wreaking havoc across the half forward line.

Darwin def. Southern Districts

Darwin has notched up win number two for the season with a 59-point drubbing of Southern Districts on Saturday night. The Buffaloes played with plenty of spirit and won the match 17.10 (112) to 8.5 (53) in wet conditions at TIO Stadium. Darwin entered the match as heavy underdogs but set the standard early with a five goal to three first quarter. Despite heavy rain falling just after the opening siren, both teams ability to score were unrestricted. The rest of the match was played on Buffaloes terms with the double blues always having an answer for whatever Districts threw at them. Ex-AFL player David Mensch enjoyed his NTFL debut with the 41-year-old kicking four goals in the win. He was well-supported by Luke Clark who also booted four.

Wanderers def. Palmerston

A talent-stacked Palmerston was unable to overcome Wanderers at Northline Oval on Saturday. The Eagles recorded win number five for the season with the 11.8 (74) to 7.2 (44) victory. The Magpies were sparked by a number of key inclusions including Aaron and Alwyn Davey who have recently ended their AFL careers at Melbourne and Essendon respectively. Unfortunately for the home crowd, it was not enough to drag them over the line. The Eagles made the most of the torrential conditions and were always one step ahead.

St Marys def. Waratah

St Marys has recorded win number 26 in a row with a 119-point win over Waratah in hot conditions at Gardens Oval. The Saints dominated the contest from the onset and eventually won 23.12 (150) to 4.7 (31). It was a competitive opening to the match but the Saints’ dominance around the middle and experience in the backline meant that the Warriors were unable to trouble the scorers in the first term. That set the standard for the rest of the match as the Saints forwards capitalised on their opportunities. Skipper Peter Macfarlane is arguably the form player of the competition and had another day out with a bag of six. Shaq McKenzie continued his brilliant season while his wingman partner in crime Kirby Bourke notched up plenty of the ball by using his amazing fitness base. Ben Rioli has been phenomenal in his limited games this year and today was no exception in what was his close mate Jack Long’s 50th game. Luke Stapleton’s cool head in defence was invaluable, especially early in the contest. St Marys now enter the bye with a 7-0 record before its big clash with Southern Districts in a fortnight.

JDC,
St Marys have a big win, what happened to the gun forward Van Uhen, bagging only 4 goals.... was he injured, shut down by the opposition, or a different game plan in the forward line implemented?

Saints has a quiet day forward. Van uhen isn't the only gun forward up there and 4 would usually be considered reasonable going. The backs were very good even if JDC was trying to gift tahs a goal but they even fubared that. He's a kind kid jdc. Saw tahs were having trouble scoring and was being generous.

I would like to see willie rioli jnr back in that side. The entertainment forward of centre would be exceptional.

Yeah Van Unen didn't kick a bag like the previous two weeks but he was still serviceable with 4.4 to his name.

Haha that was a terrible decision! The last thing you want when you're not getting a kick is to give a free kick away in front of goal. I tried to argue that the rule is "perceived pressure".

Yeah Willie will be a great inclusion to the side and if he's not drafted on Thursday he's a massive chance for the Southern Districts game.

JDC,
I know its early days, but at this moment, what are your thoughts on how The Thunder will go in season 2014. The restructured comp will in particular have Southport, Aspley and Redlands much better sides with the cream of players they are recruiting, especially from Labrador, Morningside and Broadbeach.
Will make it very difficult for The Thunder to match these sides with the list they have available. They will have to recruit some guns to be competitive.

I dunno mate that's a tough question. There's no doubt that the standard of the new restructured NEAFL competition will be a step up from the previous couple of years. Thunder had a disappointing season last year and will need to improve this year if they are to be competitive against the top sides in the comp. Their list is pretty unknown at this stage with Xavier Clarke only just starting the job but I'd imagine he'd try and lure a few players over. I've heard Southport are looking really strong.

Yes, Southport have recruited plenty, mostly from my club (Broadbeach), be it possibly 5 or 6 of our best guys , our senior coach and our guru fitness coach.
Flying under the radar is Redlands. Have recruited 5 or 6 gun players as well... will be very strong.

Yeah it should be a really good comp this year. Certainly NT Thunder will have to improve on last year to compete with the top sides.

It was a wet round of football that saw a triple-header at TIO Stadium on Saturday and a match cancelled on Sunday. Due to the cyclone warning hanging around the Top End, the AFLNT decided on cancelling the Tiwi Bombers and Southern Districts clash that was scheduled to be played on Sunday at Nguiu Oval. Despite talks of potentially rescheduling the match to a later date, this will not go ahead and both sides will be awarded two premiership points each.

Wanderers def. Nightcliff

Wanderers recorded a 37-point win over Nightcliff in the early game to move two games clear in second spot on the ladder. The Eagles burst from the blocks to kick four early goals before the Tigers could get on the scoreboard. Chris Dunne was given the luxury of plenty of space early in the game and made the Tigers pay with a couple of early goals including a brilliant banana from deep in the pocket. The wet weather conditions would have affected the Tigers’ belief of mounting a comeback as the Eagles kicked away to win 13.12 (90) to 7.11 (53).

Palmerston def. Central Australia

Palmerston broke the drought to win its first game of the season after a 27-point triumph over Central Australia in the middle game. Ex-AFL recruit Cameron Cloke relished the wet conditions to play a starring role up forward with six goals. The undersized Redtails could not find an option to curb Cloke’s dominance as the big man was able to do as he pleased. Palmerston simply wanted the win more than its opponents and came out firing with the first six goals of the match. This is ultimately what cost the Redtails as they were unable to come back from this deficit.

Waratah def. Buffaloes

Waratah moved to fourth position on the ladder after a 39-point win over Buffaloes in the late game. It was a low-scoring encounter that had no real highlights in the match. The Buffaloes got off to a good start and led by a goal at quarter time before the Warriors regained the lead in the second. The fleet-footed forward line of Waratah was causing headaches for the Buffaloes defence and at three quarter time they led by 20 points. Any chance of a Buffaloes revival was killed off early in the last quarter and Waratah recorded the 11.8 (74) to 5.5 (35) win. Davin Hall and Jake Farrell combined for five goals while Jack McEwin was solid through the midfield.

St Marys def. Southern Districts

St Marys has pulled off a miraculous win coming back from the death to triumph by two points over Southern Districts at TIO Stadium on Saturday. The Crocs led by as much as 23 points with only minutes to go in the last quarter but the Saints were able to kick four late goals to snatch a 13.7 (85) to 11.17 (83) win. The Saints’ 26-game winning streak looked in grave danger with Districts playing solid football across the ground. A water-tight defence from the Crocs were able to restrict their opposition’s forwards which made goals hard to come by for the Saints. Lionel Ogden’s job on the returning William Rioli was superb while the high-leaping William Farrer played well on Peter Macfarlane. At the other end St Marys’ John Anstess not only played a stopping role on the competition’s most prolific forward in Damian Cupido, he was able to create space and rebound the ball from the defensive fifty. Jarred Ilett celebrated receiving AFLNT life membership by racking up plenty of the football and using it well.

Waratah def. Tiwi Bombers

A Davin Hall master class steered Waratah towards a thrilling two-point win over Tiwi Bombers at Gardens Oval on Saturday. The speedy Hall kicked a personal best seven goals and was instrumental in his side’s nail-biting win. Tiwi got off to the perfect start with a couple of early goals courtesy of 100-gamer Ross Tungatalum and debutant Jack Munkara. At quarter time the Bombers led by 17 points but the margin was reduced to only nine at the main break. Waratah emerged from the half time break full of spirit but the Bombers were able to maintain a slight lead. It was either side’s game to win in the last quarter but a couple of telling goals gave the Warriors its fifth win of the season. Paddy Heenan excelled against his former side while SANFL big man Craig Parry was dominant.

Wanderers def. Buffaloes

Wanderers recorded a 10.11 (71) to 8.9 (57) win over Darwin in the late game at TIO Stadium. For the second week in a row the Eagles were quick off the starting blocks and at quarter time led by three goals. The game reached a stalemate in the second term with the Eagles missing a few off its chances and Buffaloes refusing the lay down. The third quarter sparked a resurgence from the Buffaloes as the double-blues kicked four goals to one to trail by under two goals at three quarter time. Tempers flared throughout the last half but ultimately it was the Eagles that kept its cool to win by 14 points. The mercurial Daniel Motlop kicked four goals and was one of the Eagles’ best while the much-improved Zelio Casimiro used the ball with class and precision.

Nightcliff def. Palmerston

Nightcliff did just enough to beat Palmerston on Sunday at BM Insurance Oval. The Tigers fought back from a 23-point quarter time deficit to eventually win 15.16 (106) to 14.4 (88). Palmerston started the match full of confidence after its first win last week. Big Cameron Cloke was imposing around the contest and booted three first quarter goals. Nightcliff dominated the next two quarters kicking 14 goals to four with ruckman Seb Guilhaus dominating around the taps and providing a target up forward. The game was essentially over at three quarter time but the Magpies gained some respectability to the scoreboard with a five goal to nil final term. Trevor Baust and Adrian Murphy were solid for the Tigers while Palmerston was best served by a seven goal haul from Cloke. New Magpies recruit Matt Dennis showed signs that he could be a dominant player in the NTFL. The giant ruckman from the Northern Football League showed plenty of athleticism and took a couple of strong marks around the ground.

NTFL Half-Way Review:

As the NTFL enters a three-week recess over the Christmas break, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at how the season has unfolded so far.

This season has seen the introduction of the controversial new player points system that has changed the way many clubs have recruited. Despite the capping of interstate recruits, ...we have seen a high-standard of competition to date.

Around 35 players with AFL senior or rookie list experience have suited up in the NTFL this season with a number of ex juniors returning to their roots. Southern Districts have welcomed the return of Jared Brennan and Richard Tambling while the Davey brothers, Aaron and Alwyn, are back in Palmerston colours.

In a competition normally dominated by small men it has been one of the most impressive ruck divisions in memory. Perhaps the in-form player in the league right now is Nightcliff ruckman Seb Guilhaus. The 200cm giant arrived in Darwin fresh off SANFL team of the year accolades and originally trained at St Marys before finding himself at the Tigers.

Other dominant big men to enter the league this season are Geelong premiership ruckman Mark Blake (St Marys), SANFL legend Craig Parry (Waratah), recently delisted Adelaide rookie Ben Dowdell (Southern Districts), VFL team of the year ruckman Russell Gabriel (Buffaloes) and Northern Football League star Matt Dennis (Palmerston).

After 11 rounds St Marys sit on top of the ladder and are undefeated under new coach Rick Nolan. The Saints have now won 29 matches in a row as it searches for back to back premierships. The green machine were boosted in the preseason after securing the services of superstar NT Thunder forward Darren Ewing and exciting WAFL youngster Shaquille McKenzie. A number of young players have also been blooded in the Premier League which bodes well for the club’s future.

Breathing down its neck is a Wanderers team that is hungry for premiership success. The Eagles have only lost one match for the season and that came after giving up a 25-point lead to St Marys in round three. The “Muk Muks” boast a supremely talented side with the likes of the Motlops, Brad Vassal, Chris Dunne, Shane Thorne, Nathan Djerrkura, Liam Patrick and Eddie Sansbury on its playing list. Add 100-game AFL defender Michael Pettigrew to that after Christmas and it is looking a very potent side.

These two sides are a couple of games clear of the next challengers in Nightcliff, Waratah and Southern Districts. The Tigers are strained by the player points rule but at its best will have a damaging forward line in Aaron Cornelius, Todd Grima and Brant Chambers. With the Tigers starved of premiership success for almost 50 years they are chosen side for most neutral supporters of the competition.

Waratah has surprised a few sides this year and Brenton Toy is one of the best coaches in the game so the Warriors will be in strong contention for the final five. Ngukurr pair Jake Farrell and Davin Hall have created plenty of excitement in the forward line and on the wing and have complemented a Waratah side that traditionally lacks speed.

Districts are another side with an immensely talented playing list. Tambling, Brennan, Brad Dick, Des Headland, Troy Taylor, Gerrick Weedon and a scattering of WAFL recruits have talent to burn but have lost a couple of crucial games this season. The Crocs let a 23-point advantage over St Marys with five minutes left in the match turn into a loss and were unlucky with one of its games being abandoned due to the cyclone warning. A big win against Buffaloes before the break might be what the Crocs needed to give them momentum for the second half of the season.

Tiwi Bombers are in an interesting position and have only recorded three wins this season. There is no denying that at its best the Bombers are a premiership contender but consistency has been a major issue this season. The Bombers are often all out attack and its defence has the tendency to leak goals. They have conceded significantly more points than any other side in the competition in what must be a concern for its coaches. Liam Jurrah was a brilliant acquisition to the side but his latest arrest concerns may put his season in some doubt. A couple of Central Australian players have added bite to the side with Gibson Turner and Dylan Alice joining the club.

Palmerston are slipping under the radar after languishing at the bottom of the ladder for most of the season. Coach Dean Rioli has continued with the club’s youth policy while bringing in a couple of solid recruits. Matt Dennis has played only a couple of games but his athleticism and strong marking will be a valuable asset in the second half of the season. Jack Shannahan has come with big wraps after playing in the VFL and his last month of football has been good.

The Buffaloes are in a similar position with plenty of the club’s next generation running around. Buffaloes have produced patches of good form this season and have been unlucky not to snatch a couple more wins. Ex Geelong player David Mensch adds knowledge and experience when he plays while Frankston player Luke Clark is a top line forward on his day.

Central Australia was disappointing in its eight-game trial and could only muster one win.

NTFL Round 13 Wrap-Up:

BY - JACKSON CLARK

For those interesting in keeping up to date with what is happening in the Northern Territory Football League, here is a report on this weekend's action.

St Marys did just enough to overcome a gallant Palmerston side in wet conditions at TIO Stadium on Saturday. The Saints squandered many opportunities in front of goal early in the game but were able to win 13.16 (94) to 10.7 (67). It was a scrappy affair for the first half with the Saints always managing to stay a couple of goals clear. A strong mark and goal to Cameron Cloke early in the third quarter reduced the margin to only nine points and momentarily shifted the momentum the Magpies’ way. The Saints regrouped and a three goal third quarter from William Rioli gave them a five goal advantage at the final change. The rain slowed the game down and the last quarter was purely academic with the Saints running away 27-point winners. Despite giving away plenty of size in the ruck, Kevin Tandogac worked hard across the four quarters while Justin Van Unen kicked a wayward 4.5.

It was the Gerry Cunningham show in the late game with Tiwi Bombers defeating Buffaloes by 95 points. The small forward kicked nine goals in his side’s 25.18 (168) to 10.13 (73) win. Despite the slippery conditions it was a fast start to the match with the young Buffaloes side competing well against their more fancied opponents. Tiwi got on top during the second quarter but could not capitalise on all its chances in front of goal. In a similar way to last week, Buffaloes dropped off in the second half and conceded 15 goals to the Bombers. Ross Tungatalum was superb across half forward and through the middle while recruit Mitchell Hills was a valuable addition to the side.

A dominant opening quarter led to Southern Districts recording a 26-point win over Waratah at Gardens Oval on Saturday. The Crocs started like a house on fire in the first term to lead by 44 points at the first break with Waratah yet to register a score. The game heated up after quarter time with plenty of spite in the contest. Although the Warriors were able to outscore Districts after quarter time they would rue their poor start to the match. Simon O’Donnell played his best game for the season while Sonny Dann was also solid.

Wanderers responded from its controversial week off the field with a 17-point win over Nightcliff at BM Insurance Oval on Sunday. The Eagles adapted better to the wet conditions early in the piece to kick the first two goals of the match. Nightcliff responded through a couple of goals from hardworking midfielder Trevor Baust and later Brant Chambers. A late goal to Shane Thorne gave the lead back to Wanderers at quarter time. The game reached a stalemate early in the second quarter as both sides struggled to find scoring opportunities. Thorne ignored constant jeering from the Nightcliff crowd to kick the only two goals of the quarter to bring his tally to five for the half. A couple of goals to Chris Dunne early in the third quarter blew the lead out to over four goals as Wanderers took control of the match. The Tigers were still in the contest during general play but kicked eight behinds without a goal during the second and third quarters which must have concerned coach Damian Hale. A late charge from the home side midway through the last quarter brought them to within 11 points but the Eagles kicked a sealer with only minutes remaining to get back on the winners list. Aaron Motlop led from the front only hours after the birth of his son while Shane Thorne’s five first half goals was the difference. Nightcliff youngster Mickitja Rotumah-Onus showed impressive signs in what was only his second Premier League match.

It was a wet and miserable weekend of football with windy and rainy weather affecting all four matches.

Wanderers recorded a clinical 10-goal victory over Buffaloes on Friday night at TIO Stadium. The Eagles got off to a good start but failed to capitalise on all of its chances in front of goal. Their radar straightened in the second quarter as the lead increased to 33 points at the main change. The young Buffaloes tried hard but were struggling with the absence of a number of its key players including Phillip Wills and Jarrod Stokes. Despite their efforts the Buffaloes could not manage a goal in the second half and the Eagles ran out winners 11.13 (79) to 2.7 (19). Chris Kickett was excellent in his first Premier League game in a couple of months while Zelio Casimiro mopped up well in the backline.

Palmerston scored an upset win over Tiwi Bombers in the early game at TIO Stadium on Saturday. The young Magpies kicked 9.14 (68) to 8.6 (54) in soggy conditions to notch up their fourth win of the season. The loss will make it an almost insurmountable task for the Bombers to qualify for the finals. Palmerston got off to a great start and at quarter time lead by 27 points. Aaron Davey’s poise and use of the football looked a class above early in the contest. The Magpies stretched its lead out to 36 points at the main break as the Bombers were on the ropes. Tiwi emerged from the half time break looking the fresher side and looked dangerous during patches in the third term. Ross Tungatalum and Rupert Pupangamirri inserted their class on the game as the Bombers got back within a couple of goals. Palmerston steadied the ship late in the quarter to make it an even four goal lead at the final change. The Bombers kicked a couple of early goals through Tungatalum and looked a chance but it was a case of too little too late and the Magpies triumphed.

St Marys notched up another victory with a 14.13 (97) to 2.0 (12) win over Waratah in the late game. The Warriors had a strong side in and started the match well with a couple of early goals. The Saints responded to even up the contest and at quarter time only three points separated the sides. From that point on it was all one-way traffic with Waratah unable to register another point for the remaining three quarters. Scott Ward will face the NTFL judiciary after being reported twice and sent from the field during the second quarter. The Saints were restricted to only two rotations after losing Shannon Rioli to a shoulder injury early in the match and Jack Musgrove with neck soreness in the second quarter. Justin “The Ferret” Wilson was strong around the football and his courageous style of play suited the weather conditions. Justin Van Unen kicked four goals while William Rioli continued his purple patch of form with three majors.

Southern Districts made the most of the torrid conditions to beat Nightcliff by 10 points at Norbuilt Oval on Sunday. The win advances the Crocs to third place on the NTFL ladder while Nightcliff drops to fourth. Heavy rain throughout the day meant that the match was played in terrible conditions and it was hard for teams to string together good passages of play. Nightcliff made the most of the dry football at the start of the match to kick a couple of early goals. Districts responded through some smart forward play by James Sullivan and had regained the lead by quarter time. From that moment on scoring became extremely hard and the contest was played between the two forward fifty arcs. The Crocs slowly gained the ascendency and stretched its lead to a couple of goals. Nightcliff conceded a couple of early goals in the last quarter and made it an impossible task to come back from. Southern Districts’ ex-AFL brigade were invaluable on a day like today and their experience was paramount. Richard Tambling and Des Headland were terrific around the football while the returning Gerrick Weedon and Jake Roe-Duggan were solid.

JDC,
Whats the go with Cupido.... gone for the season?

It's weird, a few reliable people seem to think that he had a falling out with the club and they don't want him back. But Districts coach Shannon Rusca told the NT News the other week that he was a required player and that he was simply injured. Time will tell I guess.

Nightcliff has fought off a late charge from Tiwi Bombers to win by one point in a thriller at Northline Oval on Saturday. The Tigers fielded a close to full-strength line-up but struggled to break free from the Tiwi side whose season was essentially on the line. It was a fast paced and competitive opening to the match and nothing separated either side at the first change. The Tigers produced some better football in the second term and led by a couple of goals at main break before Tiwi pegged back the margin by three quarter time. Nightcliff started the last quarter with a couple of quick goals and stretched its lead to over 20 points before a late fight back from the Bombers. Gerry Cunningham missed a crucial shot on goal that would have put them in front after a taking a great mark and this resulted in the Bombers falling agonisingly short. Troy Coates was serviceable in his first game for the season while Todd Grima was one of the best on ground in defence.

A depleted St Marys side recorded an 85-point win over Buffaloes at Gardens Oval on Saturday. The Saints overcame a slow start to eventually win 18.20 (128) to 6.7 (43). The Buffaloes produced a spirited opening term for the highly respected Phillip Wills who played his 100th game. At quarter time the double blues had their noses in front and a vocal crowd sensed an upset could be on the cards. The Buffaloes dropped away badly in the second quarter and the Saints capitalised on this to kick away. Buffaloes only managed four behinds in the second and third quarters and at three quarter time the scoreboard was beginning to look ugly. A couple of late consolation goals in the last quarter gave the Buffaloes supporters something to cheer about but it was still a long day at the office. Justin Van Unen kicked five goals while Shaq McKenzie gathered possessions at will.

A strong last quarter from Southern Districts resulted in a 13.7 (85) to 7.7 (49) win over Palmerston in the late game at Northline Oval. The Magpies, who have been fast starters in recent weeks, got out to an early lead midway through the opening term but the Crocs fired back with the last four goals of the quarter. The game reached a stalemate after quarter time with only three goals kicked by either side in the second and third quarters. Any chance of an unlikely Palmerston win was killed off early in the last quarter with Districts piling on six goals to three in the final term. Troy Taylor was again dominant with seven goals while Des Headland’s experience was invaluable.

Wanderers managed to overcome a feisty Waratah to win be eight points in an entertaining Foundation Cup clash at Gardens Oval on Sunday. The Warriors got off to the perfect start and led by 31 points approaching time on in the opening quarter. James Wray was generating plenty of opportunities through the middle of the ground while the strongly built Luke Harder was a presence up forward. A couple of late goals gave the Eagles some confidence and forced Waratah coach Brenton Toy to give his boys a spray at quarter time. The second quarter was all Wanderers with a clear momentum shift in the game. Just when it looked like the Eagles would extend its lead, Waratah managed a purple patch of football in kicked three goals in as many minutes to get some breathing space. Wanderers had some work to do in the last quarter and they will able to recapture the lead thanks to hard work around the stoppages from Josh Cubillo and smart decision making from Marlon Motlop. Shane Thompson got the Eagles crowd on its feet with a goal celebration that would rival some of the best in the English Premier League. Despite plenty of effort and enthusiasm from Waratah, they fell eight points short and lost 14.11 (95) to 13.9 (87).

NTFL PREMIER LEAGUE WRAP-UP:
BY - JACKSON CLARK

A young Wanderers outfit has easily accounted for Southern Districts in the first game of the triple-header at TIO Stadium on the weekend. The Eagles had over a dozen changes to the previous week’s side but this did not deter them as they ran out winners 16.8 (104) to 7.6 (48). It was a tight first quarter with both sides having to adjust to the heavy conditions of the ground. After quarter time it was all one way traffic with the Eagles outscoring the Crocs 14 goals to four in the final three quarters. Recent NT Thunder signings Liam Patrick and Mitchell Taylor were exceptional in the wet conditions while Nathan Djerrkura found plenty of the football. Damian Cupido made his return for Southern Districts and booted three goals.

Nightcliff has sent a message to the rest of the competition after a resounding win over fifth placed Waratah. The Tigers dominated from the onset and won by 79 points outscoring the Warriors 31 scoring shots to five. Waratah could not manage a goal after half time and it is the second time this season they have been restricted to only two goals for the match. Daniel Dzufer used his superior work rate to burn off the opposition and reward himself with three goals while youngster Brandon Parfitt continued his impressive debut season.

Palmerston fought off a determined Buffaloes side to win by 15 points in the late game on Saturday. The match was played in very sloppy conditions with the playing surface badly torn up from the previous two games. The double blues had the better start to the match and were able to take a narrow lead into the first change. The Magpies pegged back the lead and always managed to stay a couple of goals in front for the rest of the game. Palmerston are now only one game behind Waratah on the ladder and a strong finish to the season could give them an unlikely finals berth.

A mercurial five-goal performance from small forward William Rioli helped St Marys to a 58-point win over Tiwi Bombers at Real Estate Central Oval on the Tiwi Islands on Sunday. Rioli played dry weather football on a wet day and handled the ball superbly en route to his five goals. The Saints were in control for most of the contest apart from a concentration lapse in the third quarter that saw Tiwi gain the momentum. The ship was steadied in the final term as the Saints won 19.21 (135) to 11.11 (77). Skipper Peter Macfarlane continued his excellent season in front of goal with another bag of five in the absence of competition leading goal scorer Justin Van Unen. 2013 teammates at Mooroopna in the Goulburn Valley Football League, Karl Lohde and Mark Blake, formed a great combination and resulted in many centre clearances for St Marys.
