Not getting dolby digital

I just purchased a lg dvd recorder with full hd upscaling but i cant pick up any of the full hd channels, only the standard digital channels.
Also i used an optical cord from my dvd recorder to my ampifier so i could get dolby digital but its not playing my audio through it. I use the same technique for my ps3 to my amp and it plays audio in dolby digital fine.
Any help would be great

What model? I don't believe that LG makes any dvd recorders with HD tuners. I'm only aware of the Panasonic that has this.

The LG recorder RH397D only has an SD-digital tuner, but most SD channels use Dolby Digital 2.0 in which case you need to use the Pro-Logic II functions on your amp. If the audio is not getting through to your amp, might want to check the connections and make sure you're using the right settings on both the amp and the DVD recorder. You may have to enable the optical audio through the DVD set-up menu.
