hmmm...little full on I think
Other Teams
Roos
hey everyone I'm a roos supporter and I follow freo's up's and downs and alike the roos u seem to stumble a lot of the time but manage to still play and I'd just like to say that no matter how many games you win or lose this year I'm sure the boys will prevail with their professionalism and loyalty to the jumper, good luck to the team and congrats to loyal supporters who stick by thick and thin, u do your club proud.

Bad luck, Dockers.

IMO a good open game in which both teams played well. Connelly has your team quite well-organised, but it'll take a while to improve the skills under pressure and you need more pace in midfield.

Cook & McManus, two of your much-maligned players, played well I thought and Medhurst was excellent, especially as the game wore on. If we can play Phil Matera and Merenda in the same side, I don't see why you can't play Farmer & Medhurst similarly.

However, at the end of the day, we won and deservedly so, so better luck next time and go Eagles!

Yep fair enough VOR
I agree the best team won on the day.

At the game today, I couldn't believe people leaving before the end of the game. I love my footy and would stay till the end of the game no matter what. But quite a few dockers supporters were leaving early to avoid the final siren and the roar of the eagles fans. Now although I do love my footy, it's still pretty hard hearing that at the end, especially from the eagles fans, but I figure if you stick around for the bad times, the good times will be even sweeter when they come around.

After last year I think this years Derby was of alot better standard ... what does everyone else think?

The Dockers were pushed around again. They were always under pressure and couldn't lay a hand on Jako (except for Croady) all day.

They choked. Should have killed them.

NO EXCUSES!

(and I stayed to the end as well)

All up it was very very disappointing. Once again the expectation was there for a big game, and once again the team has failed to deliver. Fair dinkum, I used to be a fairly optimistic person about 8 years ago, this bloody club has turned me into the biggest cynic of all time!

Anyway, back to the game. 3 major weaknesses shone through.

The defence was a complete joke. Once it went inside 50, you could put money on at least a score, usually a goal due to the total lack of pressure. There was also very little attacking play from the half backs. If by some miracle the ball was cleared, it usually took long enough so that all the eagles had the time to match up on their opponents.

The tackling was abysmal. Too many tackles missed. Enough said.

Very few players were capable of taking contested marks.

The positives:

Medhurst. Looks like being a pretty handy player. Once Farmer gets back, I would expect him to get the 2nd best small defender as well, which could expose the lack of depth in any opposition's defence. Good mark for a player his size if the ball can get down there for 1 on 1 contests.

The midfield performed pretty well. If the backline did their job, we would have won on the strength of the midfield gaining more of the ball. Although Fewster is not worth a ruckman's bootlace, Eastaugh should have played instead.

McManus played his best game in years. Still nothing special, but he has this knack of being able to get himself into open space, and today he managed to capitalise on it instead of getting it and predictably turning it over.

Jeez I hope we beat St Kilda next week. God help us if we can't.

im with you 100% on that comment, the second derby of last year was absymal, a major dissapointment

the derby today showed 2 teams that were committed and played out all 4 quarters. Although the skill level at times wasnt the best i think that'll improve as the season wears on

a very enjoyable game in the end

Not trying to be negative but supposedly StKilda were very very good yesterday.... and they also have a full squad to pick from, a luxury you guys cant afford at the moment

I watched a bit of their game, adn St Kilda was surprisingly impressive. Their skills were pretty good and they seemed quite well organised. I think they could be a pretty good team this year, especially if their prized recruits hit good form (Gehrid, Hamill, Black and co).

Skill level is only relative to the pressure the opposition puts on you. Hopefully Freo will be hurting after today and put some severe pressure on the saints.

then, I think as we did today, the errors will come.

One of the better derbies, that's for sure. Really promising signs for both sides

It was really not the greatest idea to play a derby in R1 - it would have been a far better result for both WA sides to get a win in the first round. It would have been a great potboiler for the season for both sides

I feel your pain Rob. Seems WC always play above themselves on derby day while our boys play below.

Still, 1 round does not make a season - unless you get rolled in the last quarter and end up losing by a point, but I digress.

A good and open game with plenty of action and scoring is always a dellight to watch.
I wonder about the conditions though. Heat and humidity. It's probably a one off situation, similar to preseason conditions and it will be interesting to see how both sides go when it is cooler and also in wet conditions.

Good sentiments in here, I agree the Dockers were beaten by a better side.

Carneagles, I agree - a R1 derby doesn't quite sit right with me. I'd like to see a bit of suspense build and a tiny bit of form under everyone's belt. Not before round 3 for me.
