NT Thunder are the latest participants in the AFL, taking over the football operations of the now defunct Launceston and relocating to the country's most northerly capital, Darwin.
Founded in 2009, the NT Thunder competed in the North East Australian Football League up until this season. However, with Launceston going under administration, the license was up for sale from the AFL, who were running the Tasmanian-based club in the absence of ownership. The NT government, looking to seize the opportunity, have bought the license and the Thunder, under special dispensation from the AFL, will now field a team in the national competition whilst also fielding a side in the NEAFL featuring a majority of local players.
The logistics of relocating mid-season means that although the football operations are now based in Darwin, players will not be required to move to the Top End until the conclusion of the 2018 season and home games will be split between Launceston and Darwin. In the future, NT Thunder will look to add more local players to its ranks, with Jake Neade the only current Territorian.
NOTE: Although the Thunder acknowledge the rich history of the Launceston Football Club in the AFL, including the 2012 Premiership, the Thunder's records will commence from the beginning of the 2018 season.
