Oh dear, Kevin ...

Oceanic Viking pics up new asylum seekers

The Oceanic Viking has intercepted a boat carrying 53 suspected asylum seekers and four crew about 22 nautical miles north of West Islet in the Ashmore Islands.

It is the 50th asylum seeker vessel to be intercepted in Australian waters this year.

The boat was intercepted at 10.56am (AEDT) today.

The Oceanic Viking was on its way back from Indonesia following the end to a month-long stand-off between Australian authorities and 78 Sri Lankan asylum seekers aboard the Customs vessel.

Hmmmmn. Counting the Ocean Viking another 4 boats and 159 asylum seekers have been picked up, in the last week, the latest one today

This makes 9 boats and 379 since the asylum seekers got the special deal to get off the Viking around Nov 20th.

I am wondering if it just might be easier for Rudd to deploy the Viking on a shuttle service between West Timor and Christmas Island? This would save the govt having to prosecute the Indon people smuggling crews and saves the money on gaoling them before they are released to go back and do the next trip?

Correction. Now 5 boats and 219 in the last week, 439 since Nov 20.

From the West Australian.

Australia's border control authorities are facing embarrassment after another boat containing suspected asylum seekers was discovered last night - just off the coast of Christmas Island.

The vessel is the 54th boat of suspected asylum seekers to arrive this year and puts even more pressure on facilities at Christmas Island.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the vessel carrying 60 passengers and three crew was intercepted "in the vicinity" of Flying Fish Cove late last night.

Flying Fish Cove is the the island's main port.

A source told thewest.com.au that the asylum boat "parked itself" in the cove.

Border control authorities will be embarrassed if the boat managed to make it so close to the island without being detected.

Is allowing the boats to simply sail themselves into the Christmas Island port now K Rudd's new policy? I still think a shuttle service to and fro West Timor would be more efficient. Also cost effective if the Aust Govt negotiated a commission on the people smugglers fee?

Yeah geez, we are being flooded by refugees. On track for 3,000!!! gasp, that would fill like, 5 or 6 bays at the MCG. Compare that to the 22m people here, they will take us over and pillage and rape our wives and children in no time, or at the very least taking our jerrrbs and tax money because it's no problem when taxpayers money is subsiding mining, or going to religious organisations, but if it goes to people desperate enough to risk their lives coming here we are up in arms and view them as a sort of greedy demon spawn.

You're a good egg, Inferno. I can truly feel the compassion. I for one think it's reprehensible that we make them risk their lives to get here in the first place, we should be sending ships out to pick them up from wherever, it's the only humane and non-selfish course of action.
We are the only place in the world to hide from nastiness, and the sooner we shelter all the world indiscriminently the better I'll sleep at night!!

Another boat, another policy failure.

Which policy was it that guaranteed no-one would try to come to Australia without telling us first, again?

Coz I for one am shocked and appauled that it didn't take!

Good timeing for Tony and the Skeptics

I expect to hear dog whistles soon

In the words of Julia Gillard "Another boat on the way, another policy failure".

What are we up to now this year? 55 yet? Has it gone past a 3500% increase yet? Yet people trust this guy to stop "Global Warming" when he can't even stop people smugglers. This country can be hilarious sometimes.

Good God! 439 people seeking asylum in a country of 20 million... surely the sheer enormity of these numbers demands that we must all cut our heads off and run around like chooks for the rest of the month... ;)

It's happening all over the world. It would be happening if John Howard was still in the hot seat.

Tell me, what global dramatic event happened in August 08 to suddenly turn around the decline of people illegally traveling to Australia?

Answer: The red dot marks the spot when the Immigration Department weakened the laws. Coincidence no?

How many Sri Lankan refugees did Howard deal with?

The Sri Lankan government pulled out of its ceasefire at the beginning of 2008 with heavy fighting in May through August. This continued and peaked in May of this year when they declared victory.

Considering that the origins of a number of these boatloads is stated as Sri Lanka I think it safe to consider this civil war in you calculations. My question was to highlight this.

Got a chart that covers more years? or are you using one that just makes your argument look better?

The Government has just $11.3 million to provide a fibre optic network for the island. Rudd is treating these economic opportunists better than our own citizens.

The Government is also spending an extra $50 million dollars on the island.

There's your tax at work Inferno, kimp, BigBadCam :thumbsu:

That chart proves the changes in the law by Rudd meant a huge increase of illegal immigrants. Not the history of Australia's boat people since 1788

More demonising and emotional responses.

So are you against off shore detention centers?

If you say it and believe in it enough, it may come true. Looking at just 4 years of data does not show an accurate picture and is selective and misleading at best, so I'll repeat the questions again: Got a chart that covers more years? or are you using one that just makes your argument look better?

Australia has taken over 500k refugees and far, far more under family reunion.

Still, don't let obvious facts get in the way of your preaching.

Come off it Chief. We have been over this. Govenment policies can and do influence arrival numbers.

Why do huge numbers of Asian refugees cross the entire width of Europe to get to the UK? The economy? I don't think so. Weather. No.

Now what could it be?

Don't let the fact that we were obviously talking about 2009, rather then the entire history of the country, get in the way of an ill thought out comment.
