Anyone going to an Oktoberfest this year? Or been to one in Germany?

There is one happening at my Uni in a coupla weeks time that I'm going to, although nothing would beat going to one over in Europe.

Got some Norwegian friends from uni who went to the real Oktoberfest last year and they said it rocked. Not surprising really when the whole thing is about drinking beer.

I'd be interested in seeing a Bigfooty group go. I've been to Munich and that was feral but then again so is the showgrounds.

When the Melbourne one started in 1983, it was attended pretty much only by the German-speaking community, and was quite family friendly despite the beery theme.

These days, it's over-run by flannel shirted, mulletted bogans who wouldn't be able to find Germany in an atlas, drinking bourbon & coke and VB instead of the quality beers on offer.

I've been to about 8 or 9 Melbourne Oktoberfests over the 20 years and they're pretty good value if the halls don't get too crowded. About $120 will get you a stein to keep, about 15-18 refills, and a hearty feed. The souvenirs are pretty reasonably priced too.

The Sunday is usually pretty dead, and if the Saturday is warm and sunny the place is chockers. Friday's a bit of a nothing day because it's too short. I think they stop serving drinks at around 10.30pm the first two days, and 6ish on Sundays.

Train service into the Showgrounds is very handy, but don't rely on cabs because they're hard to come by, especially if you're staggering around like Carlton defender.

It's not actually, but don't tell that to the thousands of p1ss-head tourists who use it as an excuse to invade Munich.

Pray tell what the Oktoberfest is about then if it isn't just about drinking beer? They are kinda p*ssheads, but from what they said they went there to have a few drinks, a few laughs, and enjoyed themselves. They are nice blokes anyway.

Closest equivalent is probably the Royal show (it actually started as a Royal wedding celebration).

As for beer drinking - Bavarians can do that any time of year, nowadays the Oktoberfest version is for the tourists benefit only.

I've been - to the real one in Munich.

I was actually quite reluctant to go, but was dragged along by some friends. Had an absolute ball. One of the funniest nights of my life.

For me, Oktoberfest is aprox 300 days out of the year. Don't always cook German food, but there is always lots of German beer. And when I'm bored in my spare time, I conquer France.

I had the pleasure of going to Munich a few years ago. Highly recomend it to anyone, yes even non beer drinkers.
The Melbourne one is a good day out.
Best piece of advise if you are put off by p1ssheads......JOIN THEM!!!
