What a horribly stale ground it is. Last night it just completely lacked any atmosphere whatsoever.

The loudest cheer went up with about 30 seconds left.

54-6, the team smashing the Knights, playing bloody good footy along the way and it was like a morgue.

I always wondered why they called OP the graveyard, at least I know why now.

At least they've upgraded the cheerleaders.

I thought it sounded OK, but I'll take your word for it. Looked like a good crowd too, any word on numbers???

The "Melbourne, Melbourne" chant went up at its loudest right near the end. The guy with the ding ding bell couldn't get them going either.

I thought there was more people in the West and East stand than usual, but the GA area looked thinner than normal.

it did look bigger...

I thought at first look that it was over 10,000, so 9,000 is a bit of a shock to hear. Still take into account the fact its the first game of the season so late into the season, like promotion (the talked about ad has hardly been shown) and a really really cold night.

Still if they keep playing RL like that crowds will come

Considering NRL hasn't been played in Melbourne for 8 months, that crowd was pretty pathetic even by Storm standards.

My theory is this;
I was at the Cats V Dogs game at the Dome and I saw about 4 or 5 dogs supporters with Storm gear on (when I usually only see it once or twice a year). From what I read on here It seems that Altona is where RL is followed most in Melbourne, and being close to Footscray it also has a strong Bulldogs following. The Bulldogs are currently playing great footy, sitting pretty on top of the ladder, as opposed to them underachieving since the Storms inception. So what I'm saying is that the small number of dogs supporters who might have preferenced going to a Storm game (everyone loves a winner) have now jumped back on the doggies.

Just a theory.

There were quite a few Dog supporters at the (Storm) game.

Ive never been to a RL game, thought bout it on Saturday night but none of my mates were interested, but i went to pretty much every victory game there last season and the atmosphere was awesome.

It'll probably improve when the new stadium is finished!!

The atmosphere for games at Victory games is insane, Its just I dont think Victorians want to embrace Rugby League.

I know what you mean. on a recent episode of the NRL footy show I think it was last weeks one, the guys went around melbourne asking people what they thought of the success of the storm this year and one lady said "I was offered free tickets to olympic park to watch the storm play and even then I didn't accept them". Now I have to admit that is pretty lame:( just as an example the popularity of the storm in melbourne is definately not on par with the popularity of the swans in sydney. at least sydney newspapers devote a page or two to the swans each week

The herald sun has a page on the storm and NRL every week too

But that being said, NRL really does't interest us down here! I'd go i f i got free tickets and might even go sometime this season! The reality is it will always be behind AFL, soccer, and Union in Victoria!

Whereas AFL game will more likely get stronger up north because ex-vics and South Aussies will go north for warmer climates! And you guys dont come south often because it to cold, plus the Kiwi's much prefer Union!!

Why do you think that Union is more popular than League in Victoria?

They got 26k for Australia v Italy last year.

NSW v QLD has already sold 25k+, plus State of Origin outrated the Bledisloe Cup last year.

Not really . If you're interested in something and the price is reasonable most people have no hesitation in buying tickets and going . But if you're not interested then , freebies aren't going to influence too many people .

.

Anyone who lives in Melbourne- is there anything being said about the game being played there this weekend? I mean its the Strom playing the Cowboys 1 and 2 on the ladder and potentially the biggest game being played this year.

Because unlike you, we live here.

Thats pretty good considering the oppisition, I wouldn't expect much more in Sydney or Brisbane against Italy

Now against real oppisition
Melbourne first hosted a Bledisloe Cup game in 1997, when 92,000 people filled the MCG. The match returned to the MCG in 1998, defying the ARU's promotional hiccups to attract a crowd of 75,000.

Over 150,000 went through the Telstra Dome for the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7's.
You realise the Bledisloe was on at 10:30 on a Saturday Night the worst rating night of the week by far, as oppossed to 9:30 Wednesday Night for the SoO

Face it we got more for a Western Force V Crusaders trial game than what the Storm can get

I've seen a an ad come on a number of times for the game that features a nun:confused: , and the a tag line "Rugby League theres no avoiding it". or something like that with the up coming game printed across the screen

here we go....

I was in a crowd of 92,000 watch second rate athletic heats at the Sydney Olympics.. running in circles and throwing objects is therefore taking over sport in Sydney.. rugby league watch out!

hoops = troll.

It would be interesting to see a S14 side in Melbourne if only to see some real proof as to how much Victorians allegedly support Union over League.

From a personal perspective and after 7 years of living here, I just don't see it.

Top Gun had great ratings on TV last year.

Flying airforce jets is more popular in Qld than rugby league.

Watch out in the skies up there!!

Haven't heard jack:D:D:D:De about it. First time is when I just read your post.

Will the redeveloped stadium have upgraded transport links?

Its already within 500m's of a train station as it is and across the road from the tram stop that takes your either to said train station or into the heart of the city. Transports link's are not the issue here.

I've seen plenty of Victorian's claim that AFL is more popular in Sydney (lol) and Brisbane based on crowds.

Now against real oppisition

Why haven't they been held there since?

Yeah, almost everything else sold out too. Doesn't indicate the sport's popularity considering it's not even the full version of the game.

You realise the Bledisloe was on at 10:30 on a Saturday Night the worst rating night of the week by far, as oppossed to 9:30 Wednesday Night for the SoO

And it was shown live in 2004... and State of Origin delayed at 9:30pm still outrated it.

One of two professional games for Union in the year.

Rugby league will probably get 100,000 for the Storm and another 100,000 for the Tri Nations and Origin.
