Had a go at Omaha hi for the first time in a $5 sit and go and came away with the bikkies.

Now up to 3 goes with 2 firsts and a third.

Outlay $16.50, winnings $60.00. Might be my game ;) now if only I could work out this hi/lo caper

Not a fan of Hi/Lo, from what I can gather the worst hand played also wins.
But I've only played it a few times, I enjoy Omaha as I want to branch out a bit in my poker playing.

Good to see people getting into other poker games. Omaha Hi/Lo is a fantastic game once you get the hang of it.

Basically, in Omaha Hi/Lo there are two pots. The HIGH pot, and the LOW pot. The person with the highest ranking poker hand (I.e. full house, three of a kind) takes the high pot, and the person with the best qualifying LOW hand takes the low pot. The pot is split like in Hold'em when a hand is tied. However, people can tie for the best low hand, and best high hand.

A low hand is five cards under eight like so:

A-2-3-4-5. That would be the best low hand. Note that you cannot pair, and, of course, the hand doesn't have to be in order, like a straight.
For example, A-2-5-6-8 may be the best low hand. However, the best low hand may not always include an ace. The best low hand takes into account the most low cards in order -

For example, 2-3-4-6-7 would beat A-4-6-7-8.

Most people refer to Omaha Hi/Lo as "eight or better". The reason is, is that the term "eight or better" indicates that the low hand must qualify lower than eight.

To get a qualifying low hand, the board must consist of THREE cards under eight.

So a board looking like: Ks-3c-4s, 7s, Td would be a qualifying low hand.
Now, for example, if your hand is As-2s-Kd-Kc , you would use your two low hole cards (A-2) to make your five card low hand with the three qualifying cards on the board. So, your low hand would be A-2-3-4-7, and you would definitely win the low pot with that hand.

You can also "scoop" the pot if you have both the best HIGH and LOW ranked hands. In the example, you have the best low hand, and also the nut flush. That would mean you win both pots, and take all the money.

In Omaha Hi/Lo, you want to wait for hands like A-2-K-K. Obviously the kings give you a good chance of winning the high pot, and the A-2 gives you a big chance to hit the low pot.

Low hands are also used in other games such as Stud Hi/Lo, Razz and Lowball games. Some games like 2-7 Triple Draw have you looking for qualifying low hands between 2 and 7. So really, once you master the "low hand", it unlocks a whole lot of other games, also.

Yes. In the example, you can have both the nut flush and the low hand. They are two seperate hands, but remember, in Omaha you must use two hole cards and three board cards - not one hole card and four board cards, or play the board like in Hold'em.

Yeah i learnt that yesterday. Was playing the 0.01/0.02 tables and won $4.00 in about 30 minutes. First time I have played it for money.

Played my first tournament in Omaha Limit last night
2000 Starters and i finished 21'st
Prize money for top 18
Online i found not as many idiots as Hold'em and may play a fair bit more online
Also played a NL Holdem Tournament at around the same time 2000 Starters and i finished 13th
So not a bad night on the free rolls for me

Apparently I was right :thumbsu:

still haven't worked out the hi/lo caper though

After 3 years I'm now officially a better player at NLHE than Omaha. (though this site only tracks from Jul 2006)

O8 still needs some work but I'm in the black :thumbsu:

a 3-year bump? we had a good Omaha thread doing great guns, probably back on p2 or 3.

but congrats, hope you win the Thang Luu trophy next year.

48% ROI!?! Bloody hell, why are you still playing the $5?

$873 of that $979 came last month, I'm easing my way in. I've never been that good at NLHE v Omaha, I've always been good at accumulating chips, then throwing them away, I'm probably a tad conservative so have been trying to get a bit more aggressive without getting picked off. Played a $22 yesterday and got rivered twice by not being aggressive enough post flop.

Work in progress, see if I can have another couple of months of decent results and then probably stop playing again..
