I have been wondering about who are the best one season players?
Particularly in the AFL era, what players played the most games/kicked the most goals/got Brownlow votes then got delisted after one season?

One season wonder

Adrian McAdam in 1993 kicked 68 goals for North.
1994 kicked 22
Played 1 game in 1995
Traded to Collingwood for 1996 by decided to return to Alice Springs instead.

The following SA champions spent a year in the VFL but they were well past their prime.

Rick Davies had a year at Hawthorn,
Graham Cornes had a year at North
Russell Ebert had a year at North.

Two that immediately come to mind are
Nathan Buckley at the Bears - played the 91 season, 20 games for 21 goals and won the rising star and second in their BnF.

Doug Hawkins finished up at Fitzroy playing 21 games for 11 goals in 95.

Ben McKinley in 2008. Think it was 42 goals in 18 games as a 19 year old. Never managed to reach those heights again.

I actually had no idea Cornes played in the VFL.
Ten goals in five games while 31 years old isn't too bad.

Wayne Primmer (born 9 January 1959) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and West Torrens in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL).[1]

Recruited from Woomelang, Primmer was a rover and had a particularly strong season in 1978, where he kicked 24 goals in his first six appearances that year, with seven goal hauls against South Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond.[2] By the end of the season he had amassed 47 goals, which were enough to top Essendon's goal-kicking.[3]

Primmer transferred to SANFL club West Torrens for the 1980 season, then to Mid-Murray Football League club Lalbert, in 1981 and 1982, the first as captain-coach. In 1983 he joined Hamilton as captain-coach and from 1984 to 1987 he played with Benalla, captain-coaching them in every year except 1986.[4]

An interesting case may be Stan Tomlins.
He served in WW2 (he was only 16 when it started), and so did not play senior football until 1946. He joined Sandringham in the VFA (he had trained at Richmond, but did not get a gig), he won the B&F at Sandy in 1946 and the Liston in 1947. So Richmond came calling again.
He played mainly Centre Half Forward at Richmond - did well. Only played 12 games and kicked 23 goals. In rd 8 he did his shoulder, and although he came back later in the year, he could never get right and Richmond let him go in 1949. After the usual stints in country and suburban leagues, he became an umpire and eventually the Secretary of the VFLUA.

I thought Russell Ebert had a pretty fair year at North in 1979. Averaged over 20 disposals per match (in top 7% of players in the entire comp) and had the justified reputation of being a good user of the ball.

Ebert was flying over each week apparently, so did okay (polled better than team mates Greig and Blight in the Brownlow that year).
Won another Magarey in 1980.

Cornes didn't do much at North (didn't get along with Barassi), but managed a Tassie medal the following year (1980).
Davies improved his fitness when he returned to SA and was gun forward for Sturt particularly in 1983 with 151 goals.
