I'm an absolute sucker for monthly/yearly subscriptions ever since I started working full time. At the moment I have Netflix and Stan for TV/movies, Kayo for sports, Spotify for music; I have BigFooty premium and I pay for Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop.

Are they a scam? Is it a waste of money? Or are they just super convenient?

In what way could you call them a scam?

Well not a scam, but over time you're probably going to end up overspending for what you actually consume.

The only one I pay for myself is Ten All Access (will cancel once I finish re-watching old seasons of Survivor ), but I also have access to Netflix, Stan and Spotify. The only one I probably wouldn't pay for myself if I lost access is Spotify, I just don't use it enough to justify it.

I have Netflix and Spotify ($36 a year with a family subscription), that's all.

I refuse to pay a subscription for general news media. Any industry-specific news subscriptions is covered by my company.

They seem to be peaking at the moment.

They’re a great compromise to illegal/copyright ways of receiving media or where you have to pay say $20 for a movie, people just aren’t happy with that.

Only paying a relatively light fee every month also makes it justifiable

Lol.

Srsly- like no ads, no time lapse between posting, can edit shit to your hearts content, PM a million people (or 12), stuff like that.
That sounds very similar to moderator powers.

On topic, my mum loves Netflix and so many people I know spread around their extra "screens" or logins to friends and family.

Nah not really. We can only edit our own stuff, not others.

And we cant thread ban ppl, unfortunately.

I got BigFooty Premium first and foremost because I was using the site so much and wanted to contribute financially.

I will get big footy premium when the footy restarts.
I currently have foxtel satellite and have had for 15 years.
I have a logon for Netflix via my gf's account.
I have no media subs - I read the free articles and use outline.com to get into the paid ones (works most of the time, but not always).
music I have none - I use the iheartradio app via optus that isn't metered - plays 2 ads after about 4 songs - im fine with that and use it almost 100% when driving thru my car's Bluetooth. unless listening to a podcast while driving.

I don't have any at the moment, but during the footy season I get AFL live if not Foxtel. I should probably look into Kayo for next season :)

My only all-year-round subscription is offline rather than online ie a hard copy newspaper. Sure, it may be a quaint/old fashioned thing to do in this day and age , but reading it over breakfast/a cup of tea is part of my morning ritual :) .

I don't have Netflix/Stan/Spotify because they'd be a waste for me as I'd hardly ever use them.

Would 100% recommend Kayo. It's been fantastic for me so far during the cricket. Works perfectly on Chromecast and is worth the money.

Cheers BRAB , I’ll keep that in mind :) . The chromecast compatibility factor is a big selling point for me.

Have had NBA League Pass for 8 years. Greatest invention ever. Makes the lack of footy over Spring and Summer much more easier. Weekends in early parts of the footy season can be awesome with morning NBA into the day’s AFL games.

Had Netflix and Spotify for ages. Stan more recently to watch Billions. Are there times when I barely use them? Yes. Particularly Netflix but I still think they’re great value for money. I remember growing up driving to Blockbuster when we wanted to watch something on the weekend. Maybe one kids movie and one for my parents. They easily would have spent the price of a Netflix subscription just for two movies you have to return a few days later. Plus how else do you watch stuff these days? Blockbuster doesn’t exist and free to air TV is nothing but crap these days. Downloading is a lot more mucking around if you just want to sit down and watch something.

Spotify is great too. Spent so much time back in the day messing around with an iPod and iTunes just to get music on. Again you had to fork out heaps for CDs or waste time downloading everything you wanted. Now you can get it all at the click of a button and even save music to listen to when you don’t have Internet. Only bad thing about the streaming and internet in general with music is that albums don’t seem to be such a big thing anymore.

I refuse to get an online news subscription. You will have to pry the hard copy of the (Sunday in particular) newspaper from my cold dead hand, before i do that.
