Thought I'd bump this. Since I've stopped taking the drug (November) my skin has been close to perfect with the rare pimple on the odd occasion. Was a good decision on reflection. These were the side effects I encountered:

* Joint pains in my knees
* Dry skin
* Sleepiness

Albeit, quite minor side effects.

On another note can anyone reccomend a decent moisturiser to by over the counter?

I'm on Minocycline. My first time on it was about two years ago. I stopped after a few courses. I stopped because taking it can sometimes make your acne worse (it builds up a resistance, meaning you're damned if you do, damned if you don't), and it was a little futile.

My skin became quite bad in the December of last year. I'm back on minocycline. How much better is my skin? Probably slightly.

Another thing to try, is the acne.org 'regiment'. You simply apply benzoyl peroxide and moisturiser on your skin. It works for my sister (she had terrible acne a few years ago, and her skin is now fine), and it seems to clear my skin up.

My hypothesis is that my skin isn't that bad. After a shower, or in the morning, the redness is more of a pink. And you can only notice the more notable pimples. It's nothing tragic, and it's basically unnoticeable. Yet walking around makes my skin flare up. I simply put it down to the summers in Perth. In winter, my skin improves. And when in Melbourne, it gets even better. I've accepted that the summer makes my skin bad. And that the winter is perfect for it. Suits me; I'm living in Melbourne next year.

I don't even know if you'd consider my bad skin as 'pimples'. It's more just red blemishes all over my face. It's hard to explain. They're barely raised, and they rarely have puss. It's not very common, meaning help is rather hard to obtain.

I'm semi-considering roaccutane. But cutting down on my drinking (not that I get drunk a huge amount, just a regular amount for my situation, I guess) on footy playing isn't too viable. I'm just fine to play it by ear.

If there's a pattern between you're skin getting worse and the season, it's more than likely a result of the increase in humidity during those warmer months.

Fingers crossed the Minocycline continues to work for you, because Roaccutane is a seriously rough drug.

Roacutane was an absolute miracle cure for me...I had serious acne as a teenager and after using Roacutane i was completely cured.

Dry lips while on the drugs was the only side effect and a minor one at that.

Anyone with serious acne or even mild should use it.

Antibiotics I found to be a complete waste of time, they only treat the symptons and not the cause. They essentially wait for you to grow out of the "acne phase"

Hrm. Heavily considering the Roacutane.

At this stage, I might wait until May. The weather is continually getting duller and less humid and hot. If my skin clears up by then, I'll give the Roacutance a miss. I'll hazard a guess and say my skin will be fine by the start of winter.

My sister had more cystic acne than me. I don't think she experienced any harsh side-effects. But considering our similar genetics, I'll probably be okay.

Again, my skin isn't really 'pimply'. If I run my hand over my skin, there's no raised bumps. They look like a puss-less, flat pimple, I suppose. It's like a small, circular blemish. I really only get it on my forehead (covered by my hair), minor ones on my back, and my cheeks. Examples:

(If you quote me here, try not to quote the photos. I'm going to delete them in a few days... it's just to give an example.)

Nice haircut ;)

I finished up on Roaccutane in December. Whatever was left when I was taken off the drug has gone down since, and I've just got a few little pocket scars left to prove it happened. I tend to keep a neat beard, so any redness on my sides is hidden either way.

Ever heard of Benzac? (Apologies if already been mentioned). I never had extremely bad acne like some, but bad enough to be annoying. Tried a few different options, but Benzac (comes in 2.5%, 5% and 10% strength ratings) is the best I found by a mile. Doesn't dry out skin at all and clears/prevents acne efficiently. Can purchase from any pharmacy without a prescription.

Been on Roaccutane it 3 times, 12 months each time, always flared up again after 6-12 months. Fair to say I'm pretty ****ing over the peeling lips and face, I got some decent sun burn on my triceps while I was on it and they basically turned to scales and stayed like that for the rest of that cycle. I was started on 4 tablets a day when I was first prescribed (was having pretty bad acne for the last 5 years), bottom lip was ****ed, whole face pretty much flaked every day after a shower, woke up plenty of times with a random nose bleed. If i squeezed or pinched any part of my face it turned into a scab. I copped a wet footy on my chin at training, next few days it turned into a scab with a clear line in it where the stitching of the footy was. The second cycle I was on 2-3 tablets a day, and the effects weren't as bad. Third cycle I was on 1 tablet a day as it had only just begun flaring up again around the jaws, minimal side effects and even gained weight while I was on this cycle. Obviously the higher the dosage the worse the side affects. Finished the third cycle about a year ago and it's still all clear, only get the odd pimple occasionally. Definitely worth the short term pain for the long term gain though. I wouldn't recommend anything else either, tried every ****ing product from Panoxyl 10 (benzoyal peroxide) to Pro-activ and Roaccutane is the only thing that worked. FWIW I had it bad because of my Dad's genes, he was on 6 tablets a day and had skin grafts, and still got acne into his 40's. My brother on the other hand only had acne for a couple of years..

Best shit ever. Hardly any side effects and worked so well.
