Ottens & Rodan's form this year has exposed our club once again. Just shows how poor at development we are.

Apart from Foley, many young players are underperforming and that includes Deledio, Tambling, Hughes, JON, Meyer, Raines, Polo, Schulz, Krak, Hartigan.

And senior players have developed bad habits over the years.

Next year is a crucial year for Wallace & co...it's make or break time.

good grief i am getting sick of this. otto was a handy player for us too, and i need to point out that his all australian year was with us, not with the cats. the case of rodan is one more of arse than class imho. he walked into a good team and had a rocket put up him with his delistment. if we had given him another year he most likely would be up on the chopping block with all of us livid that he was given another year. GET THE HELL OVER IT PEOPLE.

the point I was trying to make is that we are poor at development compared to many other clubs. This weakness is glaring over the years and needs to be finally resolved before we can move forward.

Other teams take a player and improve them. Many players at RFC never reach their true potential, and that's been the downfall over the years.

i understand your frustration tt. but we are getting there. i just think all this lamenting that a couple of our ex-players are actually playing well isnt going to help us in any way. clubs lose players who go on to have great careers at other clubs all the time. the media just love sinking the boot into richmond. we really need to get over it mate, our club is heading in the right direction.

How can you say the Delidio and Polo are underperforming?

If you bother to have a look at the bare statistics you would see that Delidio has out performed Luke Ball and Luke Hodge when it comes to the 50 game mark of their careers. He rarely plays a bad game despite being tagged very week since half way through his first year of AFL.
As for Polo he had a great year last year and Richmond made the mistake of playing him injured and full of pain killing injections this year up until the point in time that they decided to fix his shoulder and he was then put on the long term injury list.
A few facts would not go astray when you want to have a go at players!!

Yep, not to mention Ross Funcke, Ben Holland, Aaron Fiora, Mark Merenda, Ben Harrison, Chris Naish, Ashley Prescott, David Bourke, Justin Plapp, Ty Zantuck and Ben Haines. We've never recovered from losing these blokes to other clubs.

At least Jason Torney still gets a game I spose.

thats exactly right ghost, for once we have a player who left and is playing well for another team. we cant handle it.

But until there is solid evidence to suggest that we are improving (at the moment there is nothing substantial), supporters have every right to be disenchanted and disillusioned. It may not be particularly productive, but I can accept what TT says.

I just remember the 2011 speech. And for different reasons than you may think. Wallace said another year of mediocrity, another 9th. We came last. Shouldn't heads roll for that kind of achievement, or lack there of? Probably not too many in our individual situation, but there should be a thorough examination of where things went so incredibly wrong.

Yeah, there are too many threads on it, and yeah it seems like a new one every day. Someone should just create the 'Official Disillusionment Thread' and settle it.

But with TT's post, there have been too many instances of players not coming on as they should at Tigerland, too many to be a coincidence, so I see exactly what he's getting at. Rodan flourishing at Port is just one extra sign that our development might not be acceptable. Ottens' 2007 is pretty irrelevent to Richmond.

I believe if you surround quality players with other quality players then they thrive off of each other and push each other along to become better players and they end up reaching their full potential.

At the same time if you surround quality players with hacks, they can get fed up with having to try and carry the load and just coast as there is no-one to push them along. As such they never reach their full potential.

Pretty much.

Easy to make a call in hindsight. If Rodan was such a golden pick up, why did Port only throw the last pick of the draft at him ?? 14 other clubs wouldnt touch him.

Also, Tom Harley was cut by Port after one game, and could captain a Premiership side. Its part of footy.

prime examples of how bad our recruiting is and has been over the years.

None of the above players have done anything Ottens is class and he wanted to go. Rodan good on him and he would not have been as good as he has if he had of stayed. Barry Hall and Lockett left stkilda i think they maybe better than rodan what do you think. However we have made mistakes but not with players we have lost but players we have picked Banik/Lounder come to mind all the time with regards to this.

It's encouraging to see the responses to this crap. At least most Tiger fans are capable of some well considered thought.

You complain about poor development yet leave out names such as Thursfield, McGuane, Tuck and Jackson - would it be because these guys, along with Foley, were late picks/rookie elevations who have obviously had great development to bring them on so well. And Raines went from a pick 76 to Rising Star runner-up. Maybe he's stagnated and certainly has limitations, but I'd suggest from a 5th rounder to a top youngster suggests great development.

You didn't mention Patto who is developing twice as fast as most players his size. To say that Deledio and Polo are not coming along is ridiculous and poorly thought through, and even Tambling, while not setting the world on fire with his football, has been undeniably improving (aka 'developing') through each of his first three seasons.

As others have pointed out already, Ottens played his best football at Richmond and it's taken the Cats three years to get him back where he was at 21. And Rodan? Handy player, but let's not get carried away just yet.

If it worries you that we let a player go who has improved at another club, console yourself with Graham Polak's development this year, or Tuck being thrown away by the Hawks, or Simmonds playing the best football of his career in the yellow and black.

I've said it before; don't believe what the idea-starved media say about us.

I admire your passion for the cause but it is disappointing that most of RFC's youngsters never develop as much as other teams, and our senior players are perennially sh1t. The only teams that went significantly backwards this year were RFC, Dogs and Saints.

3.5 and a scattering of Brownlow votes is nothing for us to hang our hats on.

I admire your politeness. I would imagine you think the Hawks have developed players well over the period you say we have failed, so I'll take the RFC players you use as examples and compare them with Hawthorn players taken earlier than them in the draft (or a little later where needed). The names in red are now developing somewhere other than Hawthorn.

Deledio (1) - Roughead (2) : Lids is miles in front.
Tambling (4) - Franklin (5) : Buddy is miles in front, but each night I hope and pray ...
Hughes (24) - Muston (22) : pretty much all square - a zero all draw. Yes Muston has had injury problems, but let's face it, he hasn't developed.
JON (8) - Dowler (6) : same as above, but JON has had a fair whack of injuries too.
Meyer (12) - Lewis (7) : light years between the two, conceded.
Polo (20) - Murphy (21) & Little (26) : Polo is miles ahead of them both combined.
Raines (76) - Ball (51) & Dawson (41) & Miller (25) : for all his limitations Raines has all three covered and then some.
Schulz (12) - Brennan (8) : as disappointing as Schulz can be he is still twice the player Brennan is/was.
Krakouer (41) - Greene (28) & Ries (21) : hard to believe but Krak well and truly 'outdeveloped' these two put together.
Hartigan (70) - same draft and comparisons as Raines (but admittedly with a less emphatic result).

And these are the guys you find disappointing.

My point being that even a team that seems to have done everything right in "player development" over the past five years has made as many ****-ups, if not more, than us.

Just because Robert Walls says it's true, doesn't make it so.

yeh wouldn't it be great if Ottens (the legend be praised) won the Norm Smith Medal (what did u guys get 4 him anyway.) By the way he won the Prelimary Final on Friday for us Single-Handedly. How many Richmond players have won a prelim final?

lets not get too excited catzfan, my mum could get a kick with the Cats this year the way their flying. Tell me about Otto the first few years at the cats. U people were screaming to get rid of him early last year. He is a good bloke and currently playing good footy, but didnt have instant impact at the cats.
