Something I noticed at the game today was that we tend to zone in defence which is fine. However, when the eagles had the ball from a stoppage, say 70m from goal, we would be protecting the space between the goal line and about 40m out. That all sounds great except it means we leave eagles players effectively free anywhere from about 45m out from goal.
Last time I checked, most players listed in the afl can kick 50m pretty comfortably. So what did wce players do? Chip the ball to a teammate 45m out for an easy, albeit moderately long shot at goal.
Would it not be easier for everyone down back to understand to just man up in defensive 50? It looked like guarding the space between the back of the soccer goal net and the goal line at times. Or guarding the space between the try line and the dead ball line in rugby. What is the point? Would it not be easier for all concerned down back to just try and man up to at least even a contest in defensive 50?
There is a time and place for zones, but inside defensive 50 seems pretty stupid to me.
