Are we likely to get a better player than Chip for pick 25? Probably not.

Is Chip going to be in his prime when our next window opens? Probably not.

Should we trade Chip? If you want to finish mid table in 2018-2020, then you should keep Chip. If you want to give yourself hope for being in flag contention in 2021 onwards, then yes we should trade him if the offer is half decent.

Trading these guys is a way of getting a core group in the same age profile (so they're peaking together).

BTW, I enjoyed 2005/2006. There were no guarantees but there was hope.

Being stuck long-term in the middle of the table with no hope... It's the worst.

As a bills fan I can vouch for that
NFL is a very different game, one player if he's a QB can make all the difference
But in all sports there are teams that are successful across decades and failures across decades.

We aren't Sydney who have to stay mid table or better to remain relevant but we should also give Clarko some time to right the ship

Any chance we can get a hyperthetical trade thread going, I know it's only April but we can pretty much right the year off already! I do enjoy reading people's thoughts on how we can improve our list..

Hi everyone, i was just wondering what your thoughts were regarding Hawthorn players being traded come seasons end, who do you see going and is anyone slightly annoyed that you re-signed Breust so early considering atm he would get you a top 5 pick?

I'd be more worried about us giving the top5 pick to someone else again...

In the 2008 Grand Final we had 5 rookies picks on the ground, Sewell, Young, Campbell, Osborne and Gilham.
Two more watching from the stands in Suckling and McGynn

We gave away 1 first round pick for Jom

Just 1

We arent going to get better with a bunch of 2nd and 3rd round picks - we have players who can do certain roles already, we need to build up our next elite brigade.

Free agency will drop to 7 years so that pool will open right up next year, people need to chill about the recruiting when we already have good players who are playing like s**** - that is our biggest problem - not how to get more chook lotto picks

BUT WE GAVE AWAY 10,728 POINTS WORTH OF PICKS AND JAEGER HASN'T WON A BROWNLOW YET - WORST DECISION EVER!!!!11

there you go.

He ain't worth a top 5 pick by himself anymore...

About pick 25-30. I'd do it. Good player but now the wrong age profile for our list. I'd just be hoping some one offers a fraction more.

I'd see how many of these guys we could trade and this is what I'd be willing to part with them for.

Bruest - pick 15
Gunston- pick 5
Smith - pick 15
Frawley - pick 25
Stratton - pick 35
Poppy - pick 40
Shiels - pick 40
Cyril - pick 5. Na, screw it. I wouldn't trade Cyril for pick 1!

Top 3 picks are gold. If you can't get that, you want as many quality darts to throw at the dart board as possible.

While mentioning all the gold you wish to trade for beans, tell us who are the Shaws, wards and Johnson types that you are going to stake them on while they grow. A house without foundation is not a future asset.

With the Demons, Suns, Lions, Carlton and Collingwood having had a raft of first round picks over the past few years and still all being basket cases - while the Hawks won a premiership with some first round picks, a fair slab of mid-late draft picks and a healthy amount of trading for players needed to fill roles - why the **** is everyone so bloody obsessed with the bloody draft? It's not the guarantee of a seemless rebuild that everyone is making out. In the era of free agency there are many ways to rebuild your list without going all crazy Vossy at the trade table.
Needs far more likes.

Are there any restrictions on trading someone that was previously picked up as a RFA? I don't imagine there are. One player who, at this stage, I wouldn't mind seeing on the block is Vickery. Once Ceglar comes back and since Roughie is playing - he's surplus to requirements and hasn't shown much. I'm still willing to give him the rest of the season to prove himself - but if he is still lumbering along I wouldn't mind seeing if we could get a second round pick back for him. Particularly struggling teams who need height (Lions especially) might be willing to pay overs a bit and give us a second rounder. I'd rather part ways with him than give away Sicily.

Personally I'd rather see evidence the club is resolutely carrying out its thorough plans than flipping around wildly like bigfooty posters suggest

If a professional list manager was coldly examining the list they would see the talent in the mid age group and think the job will be far easier and quicker than at many clubs

I can see us trying to trade next years picks in for some for this year certainly. It would bank on clubs banking on us going even worse next year. Coupled with some trading of at least 1 25 year old + premiership player.

The contracts with our Mid age players suggest we don't intend to trade them and probably can't anyway

Enthusiasm to become a Melbourne Carlton clone should be tempered with contract details for our players. the ones with 2019 2020 have obviously only just done contracts so cannot be traded (usually)

Contract ends 2017
Ceglar age 25 Duryea age 25 Sicily age 22 Frawley age 28 Hartung age 22

Contract ends 2018
Puopolo age 29 Roughead age 30 Vickerey age 25 Whitecross age 27

Contract ends 2019
Birchall age 29 Langford age 24 Gunston age 25 Shiels age 25 Stratton age 28

Contract ends 2020
Rioli age 27 Smith age 28

Contract ends 2021
Bruest age 26
