Someone needs to teach our guys on wet day the sliding kick into the forward fifty on a wet day is the go


But no we kick it high .....we should have had lecras at full forward ...kick it in low ....even deliberately skidding it in so lecras doesn't need to mark it .....a ball coming in low is more dangerous than hit on a wet ground

I'm saying the eagles SHOULD have the ability to PUNISH the opposition when a turnover happens. Which at the moment, we don't do.

If a turnover is caused, we are too slow to do anything with it, all their numbers flood back, and it's a wasted opportunity.

Apart from Hurn, we have no one who can pinpoint passes 50m away, which is essential if you want to take advantage of a turnover. There's heaps of times in the game where one of our players could try and pinpoint a 40-50m pass that "may" open up the game, but they choose not to. Hurn backs his skills. Sheppard & Bennell have been noticeably better at this as well. But the rest seem to just take the safe option and are almost too scared to try and back themselves. Hence we kick it down the lines and enter our forward 50 from the boundary lines.

Did anyone watch the Bombers/Port game on the weekend? Essendon were always trying to go inboard when exiting their half back line and were very successful at it. The game opened up immensely for them on the counter..

Everyteam bombs as different stages. The other teams tend to be quicker and realise they don't have a better option on quicker so the bomb still has some surprise about it. Also you can still bomb the ball to the right side of the contest that favours our forwards. The amount of times we bomb and the ball goes to whichever side the defender is on is remarkable. Its just footy smarts and other teams seem to have it, not all but the best ones do.

yeah we probably lack a true '70m player' but we have a few 50m players (gaff, shuey, yeo, schofield in patches).
yeah we have priddis, scooter and hutch sending it in but we also have hurn, gaff and masten (sometimes) capable of delivering inside 50 with precision.

i think the forward inefficiencies are compounded by so many flaws across our personnel and possibly gameplan.

what i see contributing is an inability to spread at midfield contests and get the ball to runners who hit the ball at pace. too much scrambling at a contest and bombing out of it, rather than finding better users outside. too many hospital passes to blokes standing still. not enough shepherding and not enough blocking for our classy movers. all of these things slow us down and hold us back even when we are in possession. and yeah, our entries themselves aren't giving forwards a chance to run onto the ball, the ball is coming in (slowly) to a 1-to-1 wrestle.

we also seem to win a lot of ball right around the 50 metre line with good intent and forward pressure but usually the next pass from there goes to a forward leading into the near pocket or to a pack contest at the top of the square. good teams seem to switch across the arc with precision or find runners leaking in on the opposite side of the ground.

must admit i haven't been able to get to a live game yet this year to get a better feel for what is happening outside the contests but these things really stick out to me.

BOMBING IS NOT AN OPTION. Playing a game strategy that relies on opponent error or free-kicks to score goals IS NOT A WINNING STRATEGY.

You have to control the game - and control the ball to win. Not rely on luck.

We can punish a side when a turnover happens. If our side is slower to get it into the 50, bombing it in isn't the right option. You have to adapt to a game plan that your players are capable of. If they're too slow to get it in quickly after a turnover, they need a game plan to get a mark inside 50 or use one of their bigger kicks to mark on the 55 mark.

You can't just say PLAY FASTER if the players aren't capable.

This is where Paul Roo's is a master of getting the best out of the players he has. He coaches according to the ability level of the players and creates a possible winning strategy regardless of the metagame.
