It has been bloody frustrating having Clark, Hogan and Dawes on the side lines and further, Gawn and Jamar have been missed in the ruck too.

One good thing has come of this however.

We haven't masked what is a serious deficiency in our list.

Before we see how any of the aforementioned talls perform, we already know that there are certain players who just can not perform at AFL level and are staring down the barrel regardless of which other players come back into the side.

I am a realist, I don't expect wins or any of our make-shift talls to be leading the Coleman or dominating the stoppages under these circumstances but we have a real list problem.

Spencer, Fitzpatrick and Pedersen are seriously not up to AFL standard. They all try in their own way but they aren't even good enough to be 2nd string. There are so many 2nd string players in the AFL who perform way better it isn't funny.

We need to recruit at least two rucks from other clubs who are at least competent, have decent athleticism and can use their height/body to advantage. Preferably experienced or good enough but simply being kept out due to better options.

We also need at least two tall forwards of the same ilk.

They don't have to be champions, they just have to be competent and have genuine scope for improvement.

I realise there is a big 'no shit Sherlock' aspect to this OP but I think some times it takes a disaster for it to sink in and in a twisted kind of way I think we will be much better off for this in the long run. Roos won't cop this next year and given his record so far hopefully he can grasp some better tall options than what we did under Neeld.

This thread is obviously for discussing our tall player situation but is also for discussing our recruiting options as the year progresses. Players not getting games at other clubs or want to come back to Victoria, VFL players worth a punt even the draft etc, ideas and discussion here.

Nic Nat would have been nice :)

Our rucks are a major problem for us now. I think that will be the focus for Melb over the summer now that Roos has started to sure up the other lines. Jamar is seriously not going to be enough and Fitzy and Spencer both look like high school dropouts. We should have made a serious play for Trent West I believe but another "wish we had".

Yeah, Jamar hasn't long to go which is why I reckon we need to get 2 decent rucks to work with Gawn down the track.

The scary thing is, as much as I expect Gawn to be ok, even he hasn't yet proved anything. It is a case of hope more than anything.

Our list is in diabolical shape
If frawley goes we have literally no young talls in the VFL to bring in and we have Hogan and Fitzy as only young forwards

We only now have Viney Tyson Salem and Toumpas as genuine A grade underage talent in the midfield who havent been ruined by our development yet

We have no one in there prime right now apart from Jones who would be considered in the Elite of there position in the competition

Much as I hate to be discussing the draft already after Round 2 (again, seems to happen every year) this year's crop of kids is meant to be big on tall players. Step 1 would be to get a young KPF to the club, especially in light of Clark not playing and Dawes not being great when he's not on the injury list.

In terms of ruckmen, this is a massive year for Gawn to show us if he's any good. Hopefully he can replace Spencer as the genuine first ruck pretty quickly, but that's a role he has never played at AFL level and I doubt he has the tank to match most rucks - including Spencer, who despite his many limitations does seem to go pretty well in that regard. Jamar is close to being cooked, and even if we can get him back out there he himself is a very limited player. Fitzpatrick is not a genuine ruck and King is a skinny kid so I agree that leaves us with a need for another genuine ruck - most likely one who's not getting games at their current club. That's how many good rucks are unearthed.

Clubs to look at for rucks would be Gold Coast and possibly West Coast.

Gold Coast have a big surplus for talls with Dixon probably a lock for the second ruck role, leaving Smith, Gorringe and Nicholls to duke it out for one spot. Day is also an option for the Dixon ruck/KPF role. Gorringe is from SA and hasn't played many games for whatever reason after being I think pick #9, Smith is a star local boy who will be off the table, Nicholls I'm not sure about but he is the incumbent. I would be having a good hard look at Gorringe this year to see if he's up to it.

West Coast have a couple of young blokes in Sinclair (who looked good today) and Lycett... for the right price one of them might be traded to us.

Dredging the list of rucks now, Hawthorn have a couple of young blokes there who might drop out with McEvoy now in the picture - Ceglar, Lowden and Grimley.

Great post Captain Jack, I like the look of Sinclair too but you'd think with Cox winding down he'd be hard to pinch.

You're right about Spencer, despite his effectiveness he can at least go for most the game but having said that it is just round 2 - touch wood.

Gold Coast definitely a team to look at.

What makes it hard atm regarding forward talls is our ability to develop them. Looking at what Port have managed to get out of Schultz has been impressive, I'm not as confident in our ability to improve a player like that but nevertheless we must try to do something similar.

The tall options in the draft sound promising.

Could have a crack at Tomlinson or Jaksch from GWS at season's end. Both are from Victoria

True. Forgot about them.

Right now part of the problem is until we replace them we can't ditch em.

We need to assume Clark won't play again (I hope he will, but we can't count on it) meaning we need to find another kpf who can ruck, Fitzy is so far out of his depth when called upon to step up it isn't funny. And this also counts on Gawn stepping up to the plate as the number 1 ruck. But I'm not holding my breath on Gawn, the amount of players we have stuffed up developing, we just end up in this cycle of waiting for someone to step up, they don't, we start again, and round and round we go.

From knightmare's early mock draft he has Peter Wright going at number 1. 202cm forward/ruck, compares him to Kurt Tippet, Hogan and Wright would set our key forwards for the next 12-15 years.

If you dont, you're negligent.

Also, regarding rucks, have a look at Downie and Phillips - with the move of Boyd to the ruck and the length of Mumford's contract, their manager should be looking for greener pastures.

West Coast have Scott Lycett too. That's three best 22 ruckmen on the one list.

McDonald, Garland and Dunn go okay but as we've seen once one of them goes down the entire back line falls apart. Troy Davis never eventuated to what we wanted/needed either. We need to pinch another Frawley from the draft.

Dont get me wrong im more than happy with our back 6 , maybe swapping our grimes or terlich for a bloke who can kick but other than that we dont have even 1 young developing key back outside maybe Georgiou

I feel like we cant have a full list somehow such is the holes in young developing players

Georgiou is 24, hard to say he's 'young' :P

Damn them to hell.
That's not including Cox either...
