Luke Breust looks to have elevated himself to another level so far this pre-season

Introduction
After reaching the preliminary final in 2011, Hawthorn was one of the last clubs to start pre-season training. A group of 10 players, plus coaches Alastair Clarkson and Luke Beveridge and a contingent of officials and sponsors, trekked the Kokoda Track in mid-November, the club's fourth trip to the historic site. The entire playing group checked back in at Waverley on November 21 for the start of an intense five-week pre-Christmas training block, rounded off with a week-long camp on the Sunshine Coast.

Medical room
Good news for Stephen Gilham (knee) and Jarryd Roughead (achilles), with both making steady progress in their recovery from serious injuries. After a long period of rehabilitation and running, Gilham was re-introduced into skills training on the Sunshine Coast training camp. Roughead was allowed to start running a fortnight before Christmas. Recruit Jack Gunston was eased into training after his final season at Adelaide took a toll on his body, but has now freshened up and is back into full work.

Summer superstar
Head fitness coach Andrew Russell nominated Luke Breust as a standout of the pre-season so far, saying the young small forward has elevated himself to another level. Liam Shiels has impressed with his hard running and work ethic, and backman Ryan Schoenmakers has made big gains in strength.

Draftee watch
The first few weeks for Hawthorn's new faces have been about finding limits and getting accustomed to a full-time workload. November draftees Jordan Kelly, Alex Woodward and Brad Hill have reportedly all settled in well. Mature-age rookies Broc McCauley and Adam Pattison should be ready to step straight in and offer support in the big man department if needed, with 23-year-old lightning bolt Amos Frank still a bit of an unknown having come from remote South Australia.

Putting the feet up
The conclusion of the Sunshine Coast camp on December 22 marked the end of the Hawks' 2011 duties. They'll be back on the track at Waverley Park on January 4.

Membership
Hawthorn went past 40,000 members just before Christmas, a 3000 increase on the same time last year, which includes 600 more members in Tasmania. This year's theme, 'Always Hawthorn', was sparked by club legend Leigh Matthews' comment that he will always see himself as a Hawthorn person, despite having coached Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions to premierships.

NAB Cup schedule
Round one (Friday, February 17): v North Melbourne and Richmond, Etihad Stadium
Round two (Saturday, March 3): v Greater Western Sydney, Aurora Stadium
Round three (Saturday, March 10): v Melbourne, Etihad Stadium

What they say

"When you've got a more inexperienced group you might have 20 to 25 players who you can really push to their limits. We're in a situation where we feel we've got 30 to 35 players who can handle the really high performance-based training that you need your group to do to win premierships. It means you can be more aggressive; you know the players' limits." - Head fitness coach Andrew Russell.

This is the key for me , our window imo is now just starting to OPEN , i still look back at 08 and scratch my head at how we won that flag with such an inexperianced and under perpard side in terms of preseason's and fitness base ......Now the ground work is done with the likes of Rioli , Buddy , Ruff , Lewis , Shoey etc , there are no excuss's......Add to that the hard body's we have added over the last yr or two ( Poppy 23, Isacc 22,Bruce 45 , McCuley 25 etc)
The deapth with have in talent is now matched with the deapth in hard'nd body's it takes to have prolonged success .....
GREAT TIMES AHEAD .......:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Nothing in that report that we don't already know. As for Bruest being the standout of the preseason so far that's 1) Purely picking a youthful, but not new, player who is working hard; 2) not a big deal now as there r still 2 more months of preseason. You don't want to star now, especially if your 45 like Bruce is.

Oh and Kudos to the AFL website for their Herald Sun-like research. Amos Frank is from NT, not SA. Just because they played a game or 2 in a different state doesn't mean they're from there.

The article was by Mark Macgugan who is a Hawthorn reporter for afl.com.au. Has strong connections at the club.

From what I've read about Amos, he is from remote SA.

Where did you read that he's from NT?

Well they say he's from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands and having studied Aboriginal Cultures for 3 years, they're actually situated in NT despite their being a council area in far north SA.

Maybe he is from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Council area and not their traditional lands, which would again be false reporting by News Limited?

Probably need to get him to confirm/deny where exactly he's from.

Say that three times fast :D

I seem to remember Pelchen saying something recently off the record like, "when Shiels and Breust put on some more weight and gain strength... look out."

Add Lowden to that category, and suddenly 'Class of 2008' in Shiels Savage Schoenmakers Breust and Lowden is starting to look pretty good! :)

The first time I saw Bruester play I was disappointed that we recruited such a skinny runt. Full credit to him for the way he has developed physically.

I still don't understand why didn't he debut for us in 2010 when we were 1W 6L? Considering we were in such poor form, not to mention his awesome form in the VFL that year. if only!

Bruest started like a house on fire and he was probably in line for a debut when his form faded. Why? because oppposition teams started paying more attention to him. They started applying physical pressure and he just didn't like it. He also wasn't doing the hard things when we didn't have the ball. Eventually his confidence waned towards the end of the season. i'm glad we waited to be honest. It has paid off . He is now much more mature footballer. Should show more improvement this year :thumbsu:.

The most impressive thing about him was his ability to kick goals from limited opportunities. Not to mention his 30 Goal season considering he played roughly 55-60% of game time each match. Is a 40-50 Goal season with in his reach? If he plays more game time then this year, and not be the sub and play more games as well. I reckon he is every chance to do it to be honest, he could kick your 2-3 goals a game which is close enough anyway. :)

APY lands cover parts of SA, NT and WA... I heard the Hawks went out to Fregon to check Amos out ... Fregon is in the far northwest corner of South Australia

And Amos talked about Mimili - "In Mimili there's no grass, just plain, hard dirt," Frank said. "Grass is soft, slippery, hard for running."

Mimili is in South Australia too, about 70km west of Marla Bore, a fair bit south of the NT border.

As far as I am aware, he's not from the NT and no one up here has claimed him as such (and if there was half a chance, we would have!) :)

The comment on Shoey's strength brings a smile to my dial - what I'm hoping is that these gains have been made in his hips/ core and legs and not just the 'guns'. He's obviously bulked up from preseason pics I've seen...

I truely believe that improvements in this area will turn him into an elite KPP, wether its forward or back its really the only physical aspect of his game thats lacking.

In 2011 part of our improvement came from the players that were new to the team or took a big step forward, like Suckling, Pops, Shiels, Smith, Savage, Bailey and Bruest.

I hope that similarly we have a number that do the same, so will be interested to see who steps up.

We do! We have young Hallahan, Thomas Schneider his foot skills are similar Sam Mitchell, Lowden, Litherland, Grimley, Boumann and Langford. Plenty to look forward to! Schneider In particular I'm looking forward to see If he can stake his claim in the NAB Cup. He will play next year, and might get elevated along with Langford mid year. :)

As good as our crop of youngsters seem to be I can't see anywhere near as many debuts next season compared to last. Our depth is just so strong at the moment that barring a bad injury run I believe we may only see the likes of Schneider, Litherland, Grimley, Boumann, Lowden and Hallahan get a small taste of 2-3 games when giving some senior players a chop out every now again. They may have to wait a year or two to be given a prolonged run in the seniors and a chance at consolidating their spots in the side. Things at Hawthorn couldn't be any better than right now, very exciting times ahead I can't help but feel.
