Has anyone noticed over the last half season, and in particular Round 1 and 2 of this year that our boys don't seem to know what to do if the opposition don't immediately run at the ball carrier? Some on here have mentioned we lack leg speed, and perhaps we do a little bit, but I think the much bigger reason that we look slow is that when the opposition zone off and allow the ball carrier time and space our guys don't move, don't force a player to come to them and don't take the game on.
I'm not sure if this has been an instruction from the coaches? But against the blues in particular we often had time and space and really should have just run it through the middle of the field and hurt them rather than standing still and then just kicking to a contest.
Now of course just running at the opposition like a headless turkey is not the right thing to do either but do we need to tweak our game slightly to ensure guys like Chaplin, Petterd, Thomas etc can give off to runners? I'm not saying we need to change our game to replicate North/Geelong but even Hawthorn use run and carry when it's required.
Anyone else noticed this apparent trend?
