Has stated that if Neil Craig isn't at Adelaide next year neither will he. Would e the perfect inside replacement for Lenny when he retires and can be used as the third tall we so desperately need. I would not hesitate in giving our first pick for him.

Gilbert + 2nd round pick to Brisbane.
Mitch Clark to Freo
Freo's first and third picks to Adelaide
Dangerfield to Saints

Make it so!

In all seriousness though, if he does come back to Vic, the Bombers will drive a dump truck of $$$ and a 5 year deal to his place in Adelaide.

Lol always love your complicated trade ideas LWP :D

I try to keep everyone happy mate.

I had another version that involved GWS, Andrew McQualter and the industrial clothes dryer the club has at the old Moorabin facility, but there's too much potential in that dryer to let it go now.

I also said at the end of last year that the Blues needed a key forward to win the flag and that the Lions were rebuilding, so they could help each other. The trade would've been Kane Lucas and Lachie Henderson to Brisbane in exchange for Brendon Fevola ;)

Gotta think outside the square in trade week!

Would love to get Dangerfield, can play both the tough inside mid role and also has pace and can be a goalkicker. Don't think he has realised his potential at Adelaide yet either, has future superstar written all over him.

Wouldn't come cheap though, would have to be at least a first rounder plus a decent player. Gilbert or Gram probably the most likely trade bait, I'd rather trade Gram than Gilbert but Gilbo probably has the most trade value being younger.

Ideal trade would be a first rounder plus Raph Clarke but don't think that will get it done. The Crows took Tambling though so you never know.

Whatever way we can get him, we should take him. Would be the final cog in the young midfield we're building, and the last successor to the classic midfield we have had for the past five or six years.

Someone that good shouldn't be at a club like Adelaide. Simple as.

Could we outbid other clubs though?

PMSL, gold!:D

Dangerfield is going to be a champion, IMO Mitch Clarkw would be more valuable to us though, we can cover midfield positions but we are desperate for a big reliable forward.

One thing is for sure, we can't afford to be quiet again this trade period. All the best clubs have been very aggresive to trade in good players and fill holes recently. We cant afford to be sentimental with players any more.

+1 I think we need to recruit at least one big name player this year.

If we can snag both I will be ecstatic. But in the choice of just one, Dangerfield all the way. Kid's a rare talent.

Gram + 1st rounder to Adelaide
Dangerfield to St Kilda

Gilbert to Essendon
Ryder to St Kilda

Raph Clarke to Brisbane
Matt Maguire to St Kilda

----------

Baker, Blake and Gardiner all retire.
Cahill, McQualter and Eddy delisted.

This would give us 5 picks in the draft and one rookie spot to fill.

First 2 picks - Best mids available. Focus on kicking skills.
3rd pick - Ruckman
4th pick - Best available
Last pick - One of Myles Sewell, James Wall or Matt Little.
Rookie pick - Best available.

Lynch gets no. 8 (He wore it his entire junior career)
Dangerfield gets no. 10
Ryder gets no. 15
Sewell/Wall/Little get no. 19
Maguire gets no. 32

No other number changes for current players. Draftees just take first number available.

----------

Next years line up -

Dempster - Maguire - Dawson
Dempster would take the best small forward of the oppostion each week. Pure lockdown jobs. Maguire and Dawson would sort out between themselves who takes the deep KPF and who takes the resting ruck. Dawson to play on the more athletic, leading players while Goose wrestles in the square against the likes of Dawes and Jono Brown.

Dal Santo - Gwilt - Ryder
Dal takes Gram's spot across halfback as the 'designated kicker' He would be a much safer option out of defence and reads the play well enough to know when to peel off his man. Would comunicate with Dempster so as not to get dragged deep. Gwilt to continue what he's been doing for 18 months; Clearing the back 50 with his monster left hoof while smashing every CHF in the comp. Espescially Pods :p

Ryder I would bring in to play as the spare in defence. He is in terrible form right now but offers the versatility that Gilbert can't/won't. I would have him take all the ruckwork in the backhalf, allowing Big Ben to play as a link up player through the middle when we kick out of the backline. Paddy would also get spells on the ball and up forward to keep teams guessing.

Montagna - Hayes - Goddard
Providing Lenny gets back, this would quite possibly be the best centreline in the comp. Set and forget, they know what to do.

Lynch - Riewoldt - Dangerfield
Tom Lynch was drafted as the next Hamill so I'm playing him forward. He would be the option across the forward 50, leading more latteral rather than at the ball. Roo would push up to the wings to provide the option with Big Ben through the middle. Until he gets rotated deep I would almost ban Roo from going inside 50 to force the team to look at other options. Dangerfield would rotate through the middle and up forward along with Armo and Steven. We know what he can do so let's give him a team to work around.

Schneider - Kosi - Milne
Kosi would be given the space inside 50 with NO ROO. He would be told to crash pack to let our two best crumbers, Schneids and Milne, get every chance they can to snag some goals. With Ryder down back and Ben in the middle we have 3 players who could all start in the ruck, 3 who could all play forward and Ryder would have the freedom to go ballchasing in the backline ala his early years :thumbsu:

McEvoy - Armitage - Steven
That brings a tear to the eye :o McEvoy is showing why he was such an early pick, the same with Armo. In 3-4 years time the phrase "McEvoy to Armitage" will be like "Cox to Kerr" or "Sandilands to Mundy" and everyone outside of the Saints will still call him Stevens, but we wont care. He'll just keep racking up the stats alongside Armo and Danger.

Ray - Fisher - Jones
Farren has been one of our most under-rated pickups under Ross. He plays forward and back, is a solid overhead mark and a decent set shot.

I've got Jones listed on the bench but he would be playing as our tagger. His form on ball has been ok, as long as he can keep hurting teams going the other way he will provide value to this side.

I would have Fisher basically playing the everyman role.

Want to stretch the defence? Throw him forward.
Need to shore up the backline or get a new matchup? Throw him back.
Want to watch one of the best kicks in modern football tear teams apart? Tell him to pass it to Goddard :p Seriously though, Fish could play midfield. With the additions of Ryder and Maguire, he would be free to do so.

Ledger/Cripps/Sipposs/Winmar/Crocker/Smith/Peake/Geary/Heyne/Polo/Gamble etc
I would use the sub spot as a reward for the best performed midfielder/flanker from the VFL. Regardless of age every player would get the chance to impress in the senior side. Do enough as the sub one week and get rewarded with a full game the next. Fail to have an impact though, and the next player gets his chance.

This creates healthy competition among all listed players and would also allow us to build a squad of 30 odd players who can play at senior level.

As far as the likes of Walsh, Archer, Simpkin, Johnson and Stanley go, they would be competing with Kosi, Ben, Goose, Dawson etc for a spot. Walsh would be first in line if fit, almost regardless of form. We need to see what he can do.

Any lapses in form/fitness in the seniors and they would be straight in. They are all young and have time on their side. They shouldn't be expected to peak for another 2-3 years, just in time to see Fisher, Kosi and Roo finish up.

Which ever one we get out of Sewell/Wall/Little would be rotated through the team and would get preference come finals time (if there was an injury) because of their mature body and proven record. If they did enough to maintain a spot eg. Matt Little comes in and kicks 6 while Kosi is suspended, then Kosi would have to play in the 2's for a couple of weeks to earn a recall. No need to star, just do enough to prove yourself.

In 2-3 years time when Roo/Kosi/Milne/Fish/Hayes are gone and Dal, Joey and Schneider are close to it, it would help to have that mature body to go along with the likes of Ray, Jones, Goddard in leading the new generation.

----------

So when do I start?

Sorry LWP, but your team above is going backwards!!

Dempster. Dawson. Geary
Dal Santo. Fisher. Gilbert
Ledger. Hayes. Goddard
Cripps Riewoldt. Montagna
Sippos. Little. Milne

McEvoy. Armitage. Steven

Ray. Gwilt. Simpkin. Lynch.
Schneider. Jones. Peake. Crocker. Etc

Gwilt not worthy of a starting spot?
No Schneider? Who takes Milne's spot at the end of next year?

I'd like to think that we could have one more crack at the flag but we have to be aggressive and get a little bit of luck. My plan relies on Kosi stepping up or being pushed aside for a Wall/Little type. If we want to go the full on rebuild, I would still make those trades but the following would change:

Hayes to retire.
Jones and Kosi to the two's.

In would come the 2 best mids eg. Cripps and Ledger, as well as one of Walsh or Stanley to play at CHF with Roo becoming a stay at home player in his twilight.

In fact if Jones doesn't improve his kicking in the off season I'd be happy to replace him in my starting line up with Cripps.

I would also think that in a thread about tryin to recruit Paddy Dangerfield, you'd want him in your team. There's no right answer though. Just one big question:

Do we think this group can seriously push for a flag or do we need to pull the pin and rebuild totally?

From my team you made 6 changes:

Out - Maguire, Ryder, Dangerfield, Schneider, Kosi and Jones
In - Geary, Gilbert, Ledger, Cripps, Little and Simpkin.

How would you use the sub?
Who's your backup ruckman?

I love hearing opinions from people but if you're going to say 'Here is what I'd do' can you at least provide some detail as to why you'd do it that way.

I hate seeing a team posted with no explaination as to how it would work.

I have had a second thought re: Jones though and he should be in the 2's if his kicking doesn't improve. I'd use his spot on the bench for one of Ledger/Cripps/Winmar etc. Whoever was in form. Basically, like the sub, that spot would be rotated each week to keep blooding the kids.

Fair enough.
Here are my thoughts...

Firstly, I don't believe we can/will trade for a big name...we have had the opportunity before and not acted (admittedly, we are coming off a poor year where some players value should have been down graded).

Ok...let's take Dangerfield. I wouldn't want Ryder. He is lazy and overrated. Maguire can't play fullback, and we have the best CHB in the comp. The only spot he could play is back pocket on the resting ruckman...I'd prefer to have Zac play there and a Simpkin/Walsh type at FB. No to Maguire as well.

Agree with you about a 2nd ruckman...Stanley needs to come into calculations for a bench spot. Kosi impressed on Saturday night, but needs to drastically improve in the remaining games this year, if not he becomes a fill-up player.

Gwilt starting on the pine is a non issue. He could be on the ground in the 1st minute. He is in the team to play his role.

I just think we've got to play the kids. They have shown they are capable...2012 is our last chance in the Riewoldt-era to win a flag. IMO, 2013/2014 will be mixed years (10 wins) before we have another crack in 2015.p

The Goose Maguire legend far outstrips the actuality.
He is not a better player than Blake.
Retiring Blake and getting Goose back will not fix anything or move forward.
Blake improved year after year, while Matt's unfortunate injuries meant that he didn't.
Maguire is 27, 192cm fairly strong (100Kg ) and not especially quick.
He would be good to play on someone like Dawes, but would not be great against much taller or faster opponents.

Would need more than a first rounder. Is he still under contract?

End of 2012, 2012 also being the year that "Free Agency" comes into the picture.

Also, from the main board thread;

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/if-craig-goes-patrick-may-go-too/story-e6frf9io-1226078964741

CROW Patrick Dangerfield has delivered the players' strongest vote of confidence in Neil Craig to date.
The Crows first-round draftee has virtually linked his long-debated tenure at Adelaide with that of his embattled coach.

As the question surfaces on whether Craig is holding the faith of his under-performing players, Dangerfield has left the impression any move to replace Craig could spark his return to Victoria.

"Year by year ... and, at the moment, it is week by week for the way we've been playing," Dangerfield said of his desire to stay at West Lakes.

His remark, on the Before The Game program on Channel 10 on Saturday, suggests if Craig's time with Adelaide is now up for weekly debate, so is Dangerfield's willingness to stay at the club.

Dangerfield, 21, last year signed a two-season contract extension - despite the long-standing impression he will not be a one-club player - with Craig being a major part of Adelaide's sales pitch.

Bolded some key phrases above from the article, contract situation is the last part quoted.

All this has, will, and emphatic language as to his status is rubbish, he may like being home in familiarity, who doesn't? Doesn't mean he doesn't love playing footy where he is either.

From the same people who turned Roo's "yeah, I s'pose moving to Seaford could be a factor..." into "SAINTS PLAYERS HATE SEAFORD!!!"
