Built like a praying mantis but plays like a king bee. It’s easy to be impressed by his height (he looks taller than 194cm) and application, which is enormous. But he’s also a natural leader, an inclusive footballer, with the ability to organise those around him. More suited to defence than attack at this stage. Paul Daffey

In his own words

What type of player are you?
A tall athletic utility who can play either end of the ground. Down back, I can play as a key position defender who reads the play well to help out teammates, and I can play as a lead-up key position forward.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
Andrew Mackie - we both can play on tall or medium forwards and can run out of the backline.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My skills by foot and hand, and my decision-making with the ball and reading the play without the ball.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
My accountability of opposition players, and also my work around stoppages.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I support the Crows. I came to barrack for them because they were the only Adelaide team when I first became interested in footy, and their two premierships probably cemented my support.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My parents have been the greatest influence on my career to date. They have always taken me to training and games and given me feedback on my game.

Doesn't seem to be heaps of info on this kid, who has seen him play?

Regularly going in the top 20 in various Phantom Drafts (obviously means very little), but I'd love some more information on him if any has some?

Cheers.

Seen him play about 3-4 times, a couple of games for SA and a couple for Glenelg during their U18s finals series.

Actually starts in the ruck for the Bays and then pushes mainly back, but forward on the occasion depending on the stoppage. Will not ruck at AFL level but could pinch hit on certain occasions in F50 or D50. Could be a very good third man up option.

His strength is his ability to read the play and the drop of the football coming in. Makes good, quick decisions by hand and foot for most part. Rarely beaten in one on one contests. A strong spoiler, with good clean hands. Fast hands in close with the handball. Pretty clean foot skills, not afraid to be daring and try a risky kick.

With another 10kg could be a Nathan Bock clone at CHB and could provide a team with effective rebound, the ability to zone off and be a third man in a hole or could do a one-on-one shutdown job if required.

A real leader at Glenelg. Went off injured for a small period during a finals game vs West due to injury. West were able to gain ascendancy in his absence.

Anywhere between 12-25 could be a fit for McCarthy from the mocks.
