Personally would like to see him get the rest of the year off, that way he will hopefully be right for our next tilt at the flag. For those supporters that are upset that he cost us a #1 draft pick & appears to be susceptical to concussion, just be thankful he didn't cost us $6 million & got concussed in the twos.

Indeed.
Petracca #2 - ACL last season
Brayshaw #3 - multiple concussions this season.
Unfortunately that's the reality of AFL.

I worry for Paddys health. I have read a couple of US based sites relating to concussion and diabetes (mainly in the NFL but referring to contact sports) but it's not something we should take lightly - the brain is so complex and it seems the diabetes has him in a much higher risk category. I am by no means proclaiming to be an expert based on what Dr Google tells me but it's a genuine concern.

The hits that he cops are seemingly minor incidents which happen numerous times a game for a power forward, but the affects they are having are shocking for him. I remember at least two other incidents which were declared 'not concussion related' but clearly shook him up. That's five or six times this year or basically one out of every two to three games he plays.

There is nothing to be gained from playing him over the next month, and potentially the rest of the year. I was concerned that Richo was even discussing the prospect of playing him next week, surely it's not even a consideration when the precedent is there from Billy.

The sky is not falling down, but we need to now take notice of what is going on with him and give him the time he needs off from the game to impact for a career (and not put his health or career in jeopardy).

There's a significant difference between the concussions of McCartin and Longer. Billy was still feeling the effects of the concussion more than a week after the impact occurred (hence the long lay off which seems to be the norm now for players with lingering side effects). From what I've read in other threads, Paddy was free of any side effects from his last concussion after less than 3 days, so they gave him a week off as a precaution (with the bye in between). They seem to be taking each concussion on a case by case basis, depending on whether they are still feeling the effects in the days/weeks after the initial incident.

Angus Brayshaw is a good example to look at. He has had a similar amount of concussions this year as Paddy, but has had lingering side effects, hence he's been sidelined indefinitely. If Paddy presents with lingering side effects, you'd hope they will rule him out for the season. The club doctors won't do anything to harm him long-term...if he plays again this year, they'll have a strong medical basis for that decision (it won't just be because we want our #1 draft pick out on the park).

Even if down the track the medicos tell him to retire , he will always be part of the St.Kilda family , and no-one will bitch about him being a poor selection , as we all know he "has it". There are just some things that come down to random chance. In the meantime give Paddy the rest of the year off , and send him to the gym. Hopefully that may help.

Also I think it's time someone seriously goes to the AFL and gets them to put a foot down on defenders punching forwards in the head because they were "trying to spoil" which is absolute bullshit. None of Paddy's concussions have been caused by this (Taylor incident could have been though, lucky it wasn't) but if he's going to be playing for 10 years just imagine how often this is going to happen- do we want to risk more concussions because prick defenders can't keep up with him? The longer the AFL lets them do it the harder they'll be able to do it while getting away with it. It's a joke really anyone who has played football knows that you don't just accidentally swing your first accidentally into the side of a bloke's head trying to spoil the ball which is another half meter to a meter out in front of him in his hands.

I'd hate to see Paddy get back and playing safe just to see him cop more concussions from this shit.

Has anyone considered that Paddy is just a dopey bastard and keeps forgetting the answers to his set questions?
I'm actually quite shattered by this latest Paddy incident. Don't even give a stuff about the game result, as poor as that was. The latest Paddy concussion and the possible ramifications have me as flat as a tack.

So I shouldn't laugh at your silly attempt at humour.

But I did.

Just a bit [emoji6]

I wonder if the doctors may say to McCartin take the month of July off (similar to Longer) and let him rest up and have no contact training, where he can just focus on his goal kicking and tank.
Then reassess to see where he is at on 1st August and if he is ready to play, play him, if he needs time let him rest. I think that may be the best outcome

I don't normally post away from home, but just wanted to post on here wishing him all the best, and urging St Kilda to cotton wool him for the rest of the year. You have a good one on your hands with Paddy, but the ramifications of this are just not worth it.
I work related to neuroscience, and I genuinely think people don't realise that in football terms this should be treated like you would a knee complaint in a young star - just give them time to get right because you have an investment.
The diabetes will complicate things slightly, causing symptoms to be a touch more severe than normal, but I think less is known about longer term interplay between the two (although there is a body of research that implicates concussion in diabetes - the reverse situation).
Basically, concussions are serious business and we are only just working out how and why. I hope St Kilda are understand that, because given time he will be worth it.

I'm firmly in the don't play him for the rest of the year camp.

Given him all the time in the world go get over his knocks. Let him work out his frustrations in the gym and get his body right. Reassure the kid and let him get his confidence back.

We simply can't risk him getting another concussion in 2016, and nor can Paddy or his loved ones.

As St Kilda young gun Paddy McCartin recovers from his third concussion this season, Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt has implored for a stop to the speculation about the 2014 No.1 draft pick's future.

McCartin suffered a head knock against Gold Coast on Saturday, having also been concussed against Collingwood in Round 3 and Adelaide in Round 11 this season.

It was the fifth time he has been concussed since 2014.

St Kilda on Monday ruled McCartin out of this Sunday's clash against Essendonbut the Saints haven't yet discussed his playing future beyond that.

Riewoldt, who has suffered several concussions during his 16-year career with the Saints, believes those without intimate knowledge of the issue had to stop speculating on it.

"As someone who's gone through it earlier in the year and last year, the external noise and speculation isn't helpful; it doesn't do anything but make the situation more stressful than it needs to be for the person involved," Riewoldt told ESPN.

"It's not doing Paddy any favours. Obviously the most significant aspect is the duty of care towards Paddy, and the people best placed to comment on that are our club doctors and specialists.

"It's not as clear-cut [as a regular injury] - the only people that are qualified to give opinions are those who are specialists in the field who have first-hand knowledge of Paddy's case.

"For people who aren't medical experts to suggest they know better or throw up their opinions on whether he should or shouldn't play is simply ludicrous."

Riewoldt, an ESPN columnist who wrote a fascinating article about his experiences with concussion in April, said even St Kilda's football department wouldn't be across the finer details of McCartin's situation.

"It is 100 percent a medical department decision, not a football department decision," he said.

"Paddy was at the club today going through the normal concussion protocols [but] it just comes down to what the specialists think. In the meantime, all the speculation only puts more pressure on a young man who has a long career in front of him."

Concussion is a growing area of concern for the AFL and most contact sports.

Already this season, exciting Brisbane defender Justin Clarke had to retire due to a head knock at training, while Melbourne duo Heritier Lumumba and Angus Brayshaw have both spent significant time on the sidelines due to their own concussion issues.

Riewoldt said it would take time before the wider football community fully understood the issue.

"There's probably going to be a bit of a lag between what those externally understand about the issue," he said. "It's great that there's a lot more being done in this space - the game has never been safer from that point of view - and players' wellbeing is recognised and valued far more than it used to be," he said.

"Until then, none of the people commenting or speculating on [McCartin] have anything concrete to base their opinions on."

Hopefully Firrito and Gibson retire at the end of this year.

Unless it's more serious than just a mild concussion I think him having the rest of the season off is a bit excessive.

He definitely shouldn't play this week and maybe for 2 or 3 weeks after that if they want to be extra cautious.

Just saw him on the news, good to see his spirits are still up with the "yeah should be good"s etcs, he's a tough kid, channel that optimism into the gym for an extended period of time, whether it's a few weeks, a month or the rest of the year. We're going to have a force on our hands once his body is in really strong condition and he can up his time spent on the ground (played some really good games against Freo and the Dons and spent about 65% TOG).

Yeah I'm sure the docs will do the right thing, I think the concern more of letting him back this year is the fear of seeing him get a 4th concussion within 4-5 months.

I guess we just have to put our faith in the medical experts to make the right call but with finals off the radar there's no need to rush him back.
