I have always thought that Subi oval should have been redeveloped like the MCG was. I have beleived that it is a better idea than building a brand new stadium especially on a swamp.
I think the cost will blow out to astronomical figures by the time it gets going or even finished.
I wonder if it will get going.
My question is why is it a bad idea to totally rebuild Subi ? Refit it, have more seats etc.
I know all the arguments regarding the state of the building and the positioning and the neighbourhood, but I don,t see them as an argument that can,t be delt with for win/win everywhere. The public transport system for getting there can be improved , aren,t we refurbishing our city? I guess the public transport will become state of the art in 7 to 10 years, parking problems resolved .
Every one goes to the footy on a train. 60 to 65 thousand seats. The place is already there .
It was done in Melbourne to a bigger stadium and it was used some of the time during the up grade .
Why was Kitchener park the big deal at the start when Subi was suggested for rebuild. Why not refurbish totally what is there now. What 2 years to do maybe three. I bet it would be cheaper than Burswood, this is politics and people with influence getting what they want , not perhaps what is best for all. Honestly I,m quite surprised that this ICONIC place is to be flushed down the bowl in a sense, as the WA home of Aussie Rules., Oh its central too hey?

Are you honestly being serious with this post or just taking the pi$$???? o_O

Just some intelligent comments. Of course I,m serious for god sakes the bloody Americans built a canal through a mountain nearly two hundred years by frigging hand, and we can,t even rebuild a iconic sporting facility with half of it sitting on the spot.

If you beleive that this Burswood thing will not be double the millions by the time its finished then you live in fantasy land me old sock. Look how much stuffing around has gone on to even get it started , WA, well well well whats that really mean? So we wait for 6 to 7 seven years before we have a stadium . If Subi,s so bad why don,t we shut it down. For heavan sake.

Yes I am asking a serious question, perhaps you could tell me why you thought I was taking the pi$$

Not sure it's worth a new thread - perhaps merge with the others?

Current Subiaco oval doesn't have the room to expand without using Kitchener Park. It is already a size 10 foot squeezed into a size 9 shoe on the current plot of land. Building 60,000 seater there will make it a size 13 foot in a size 9 shoe.

Plus there's no room to build a new train station without acquiring land and bulldozing residential housing. Ditto for road widening and parking space. All that's going to add up rather quickly, plus you'll still get Subi Council and all the NIMBYs complaining about night football, light and noise pollution, extra traffic and all the rest of it. Burswood Golf Course is a greenfield site, there's no land to acquire, no existing buildings to demolish, it has room to build a 6 platform railway station. It is next to nothing with no nearby residents to complain. It is going to be so much easier to build this thing on a greenfield site.

Subi was being considered though? So using part of the area around it could have been done I suppose. But it was done at the MCG perhaps they had more room.

Thanks admiral for saving me the time to list all of the things wrong with "upgrading" Subi Oval. I would have been here all day typing them up. It really is a ridiculous thread this one, bring on Burswood Stadium!

Have you ever been to the MCG by any chance? It & the surrounding parkland would be 3 times the size of Subi/Kitchener Park! Not too mention 2 separate train lines, tram lines etc etc etc

The proposal, which I believe was approved by the previous government, was to build the stadium next door to Subi at Kitchener Park. It also involved acquiring residential land between Subiaco Rd and the rail line (which is mainly owned by either the state government or the WAFC) and sinking the rail line itself. This was what was contained in the World Cup bid book. It was still a tight squeeze.

For reasons explained well by Admiral Byng, it was not the best option.

And BTW, only about 30% of people catch the train to the footy at Subi at the moment.

There is absolutely no point in redeveloping Subi. You're coming from the perspective that capacity is the issue. However, that's barely half the problem Perth-ites have with it.

The place is outdated. There's no way else to put it. The steps and entrances everywhere are crowded, toilets are sparse, signage poor, the seats way too close to one another... Things like transport are piss poor. You have to wait until the second train to get to Freo, and even then, it's packed. There are a myriad of issues with Patersons Stadium. It's just too old. When you rework all of its cons, you might as well build a brand new stadium.

Redeveloping Subi would be an absolutely frustrating outcome.

New stadium at the minimum.
