With the 4 boundary umpires being implemented in the finals and next year (?) and so on, I believe that by the time Simmonds retires (for mine, end of next season), Adam Pattison will become the kind of ruckman we need. I've always seen him as a CHF because of his lack of height, but now, his fitness levels are the key.

I think it was Akermanis who made the comment that it (4 b. umpires) was making it harder for ruckmen to get to each contest due to the increased speed. Pattison is naturally a fitness freak, and with these new 'rules' will be able to run other ruckmen off there feet.
Personally I think the AFL has handed us a top ruckman, not because of natural talent (which he does have...good mark), but because of more umpires being introduced.
Yes, we may still need a tall, lanky 'tap ruckman' for the centre bounces, but Patto should, by the time Simmonds finishes, be built up enough to hold his own in body-to-body ruck contests. And he will allow an extra tall to be played forward, because of his extra fitness.

In two years time, I can't imagine Richo will be as able to play on the wing as he has been this year (although he's suprised us all throughout...) and so I think Patto should be started on the wing, with the taller ruck starting in centre bounces, and then moving into a forward pocket, even if not to take marks due to lack of ability (Graham :p), but to take a tall defender who would otherwise block the lead of the Riewoldt, Richo, Hughes, Putt, Gourdis or any other leading forward. This was Patto's lack of height wouldn't be as big a dilemna for Richmond as it may otherwise have been, as he wouldn't have to out jump the oppositions ruckman.
And then, as the quarter goes on, he will still be running around as the opposition ruck's lag behind, due to Pattison's massive tank.

Is this just wishful thinking, and will ruckman continue to get bigger and bigger, or will their height be nullified somewhat and their fitness become more important as the speed of the game increases?
I watch with interest what pans out...

On a side note, does anyone think Patto could play CHF?
He is a good mark and can kick well enough...
He is a similar player to STK's Ben McEvoy- starred in U/18s and was a high pick, but is slightly too small for ruck and slightly too big/slow/unco for CHF (or is percieved to be, anyway)...
People have similar qualms on Shaun McKernan, which could be fair enough, but I see him becoming a big, hard to stop due to size, CHF in the making, one of the reasons I like him!

So there you have it, Cormick's futuristic vision of how Patto will play. And star!

Patto is NOT a CHF and never will be. It was a wishful thinking comment upon his drafting but he won his u/18 B&F and the TAC Cup coaches' award by playing in the ruck. Yes he has a big tank but he's also as slow to get moving as a tank, which kills him off as a key position player. Look how Tom Lonergan moves in comparison and remind yourself he's 1cm shorter than Patto.
The four boundary umpires thing might help him but you're also kidding yourself if you think he can start on the wing. You say he is a great mark but he doesn't take many. This will improve I think and he will be a servicable player who always gives his all. That's why he is already a favourite with the fans. He'll never be a star but you don't need 22 stars. He'll never let the team down through lack of endeavour or heart.
P.S. Four boundaries also increases the likelihood that Warnock will be a gun. He'll be able to run like Patto and is 3 inches taller (that's 8cm for the kids).

yeh patterson is a gun

Insightful view there. Pattison does have a big engine well at least we think he does as he seems to run a lot however at the same time the man only plays 60% game time at best so he may aswell use all his energy.

He can't be a CHF imo because he isnt quick enough from the standing start as has been said. He also isnt that good of a mark atm he has potential to be but needs some extra spring or something just lacks a little.

I pretty much agree with everything RATD said.

I love Patto. Unfairly critisized. Will be the heart and soul of the Tigers.

I think Patto has more of a chance of developing into a Ben Hudson type ruck. He is ultra competitive at ground level. Wins a lot of hard balls on the ground and his second efforts are great. Will be more valuabe around the ground at stoppages than at CHF. I haven't seen him take too many contested marks and i have only missed 2 games in the last 24 months.

Patto will be a valuable player in the ruck.

Traditional ruckmen are useless.

Patto is perfect going forward :thumbsu:

Competitive at ground level, wins the hard ball, uses his body, takes strong marks as a mobile KPP with a huge tank, can rest in the forward pocket and as his body gets bigger will find it easier to impact on the scoreboard in bursts.

Patto is exactly the type of ruckman that can actually help a team win matches.

I wouldn't even trade him in a straight swap for Warnock.

He's a top bloke too, a real leader, a true clubman.

These type of people on your list help get the best out of your more introverted players. He'll be part of the heart and soul as years go by.

If his output around the ground is even just average, then for a ruckman that is good enough ;)

On a side note, does anyone think Patto could play CHF?

I'd hope not as it would probably indicate we were as good as ****ed...He's nowhere near capable of holding down a KPP in a decent side. He is alright as a follower, wins the pill , competes well ....totally different ask as a CHF though and he aint good enough

Hes a finals ruckmen. Just look at Robbie Campbells impact yesterday. He just wanted it more than that soft **** Ottens.

I beleive he could play chf, he would'nt get heaps of goals but would always present, once he baulks up he will start taking more contested grabs he has shown signs that he can take a good grab. His kicking is also getting better.

me thinks its more that the team structure will change, for most sides. i.e. We will need 2 number 1 ruckmen and no longer will it be ok to have a number 1 and a number 2. 1 will predominantly take the center bounces and then take your pick from each, as to who patrols the BL and who patrols the FL.
To suggest that you can get away with a ruckman running around like a midfielder is ludicrous. ;)

Has anyone ever seen Patto take a contested mark?

I think I have seen him take one.

CHF's take contested marks. I love Patto, but its hard to see what position he will play in our future.

learning to mark isnt that hard just work on it all summer with a buddy and it will improve 10 times. if patto moves forward when not in the ruck and kicks 20-30 goals a year. he will play for many years to come
